We'll be arriving by train from Sevilla in the evening and then flying out of Madrid Bajaras late the next morning so we just need a place to stay for the night. Any recommendations?
I've stayed at this place a couple of times and liked it; within easy walk of Atocha Station for both trains and the direct bus to the airport -- but keep in mind that there are some wide intersections to cross no matter which side of the street you use.

Rooms on the north-ish side of the building have less traffic noise but maybe more people noise. You can walk to Lavapies in the evening for tapas. (Staff mean well but will point you to the plaza mayor or Puerta del Sol, since that's where most visitors head)
Four star Catalonia Atocha is rated #37 of Madrid hotels on Tripadvisor.
600m from the station towards the gorgeous Plaza Santa Ana

We just made a reservation for the Hotel Paseo Del Arte Madrid. Thank you for your suggestions!
There's an old family bakery a few doors farther along the street from the hotel that has pastry you can bring with you to the airport and make everyone in the waiting area jealous. And across the street is an old family sweet shop that has dozens of varieties of dried fruit and candy that will keep you entertained during the flight. Freshly made potato chips/crisps, too, like a variation on movie-theater popcorn.
That's great to know, thank you! We will definitely check those out!
We're back from our trip and the Paseo del Arte hotel was a welcome treat at the end of our stay in Spain. Lovely hotel and very convenient to the train station. We went to the Lavapíes but didn't like the area much. Ended up eating at a bar we passed on the way there--something de la Espronceda. The place was HOPPING and fun with HUGE, delicious pinchos. We loved it. A great way to enjoy our last night in España. Thank you again for your suggestions.
Great to hear that the hotel worked out well!
Lavapies can be a little gritty, true. There is a newsletter for expats that periodically nudges English speakers to give it a try, but it can take some time to be able to spot the nicer hangouts. I'll have to see if I can find the place you went and check it out.
