Need Help With Places to Visit in Spain

I am going to be flying to Spain from another European country at the end of May '25. I plan to spend 3-4 days there. Would like to spend more, but have other obligations at home in the US. I need suggestions on the following:

1- What places would you suggest that I visit considering that I can't do the entire country in 3-4 days. Please know that my wife and I are not so much about big tourist things, but rather places that are memorable and unique. As an example, I would never do a vacation in New York City considering everything else that America has to offer.

2- Having done it numerous times in various countries, I am comfortable doing a vacation rental and rental car. But I do not know where I would stage from to see what places you might suggest.

3-It is my understanding that Spain has a good train system. We have done that in other European countries and are comfortable using it for day trips, Perhaps that's an alternative to rental car?

4- I am not fluent, but I do speak enough Spanish.to get by in rural areas.

Any suggestions that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

What European city are you flying from and how many nights is three or four days?

Stay in whichever city you fly into, especially if you’ve never been to Spain. There really isn’t enough time to move around to other parts of the country, or even region.

If you wanted rural or not a major tourist destination there are many options, but would need to know your arrival airport to make any suggestions.

Madrid with a day trip to Segovia or Toledo or Sevilla with a day trip to Cordoba.

You can do either day trip on high speed rail, no rental car needed. Spain has public transit and walkable cities.

If you're looking for a more unique, offbeat place to visit, I would just see what's an easy flight. Spain is a large country with a lot to offer. You didn't really provide a lot of criteria in terms of what you're looking for.

Pick a city and go with it.

Madrid as well as day trips to Toledo and Segovia.

or

Barcelona with a day trip to Monserrat.

or

Seville

I have given travel suggestions on this site and was a bit frustrated at the same thing that I am doing. So first, let me apologize for limited iteniary info. We are at the initial stages of planning.

A day trip for us is no more than an 2-4 hours round trip travel getting there. I live in the middle of Texas. Somewhat comparible in size to Spain and would never consider trying to do it in 4 days.

We are docking from a cruise in Southampton UK. Since we have been to almost all of the countries in Europe, but not Spain (except Barcolona region), we thought that would be a nice side trip on the way home.

We'll fly from London to Spain. Then to the US from that same Spain airport. From reading your comments on possible places to explore, it is probably going to be Seville. That's less of a metro area than Madrid and it's southern coastal. We are not going to try to cram 10 pounds into a 5 pound bag. If we do Seville and one other place, it will be just fine for a side trip. We've got more miles on a Ho-Ho bus than my frequent flyer miles. LOL

Seville is one of my favorite cities in the entire world so that's a great choice and it really captures the soul of Spain, making it an excellent first city to visit in Spain.

Since you mentioned flying home from there, you're going to have to connect to a larger European airport to get to the US from Seville.

Sevilla is glorious.

But for end of May, if you have a short list of hotels, I'd think about booking as soon as possible.
With only four days, stay in Sevilla and do not think about any day trips.
With five days, you could take an easy train trip to Cordoba.

Again, I'd get cracking on the hotels if you are mildly picky..
