Narrowing down itinerary (Barcelona vs Madrid vs Andalusia)

Thanks so much for the advice I've already received on this forum. This is a mother-daughter trip, first trip to Spain. Dec 6-14 (including travel days). Those dates are set and cannot be extended. My daughter is in college. I am traveling from the West Coast US, and my daughter will already be in London. We will meet up in LHR to fly out together. We are considering the following Spain options:

  1. Barcelona with day trips to Montserrat and Girona/Figueres
  2. Barcelona and Madrid, with maybe 1 day trip in each city
  3. Madrid and Seville
  4. Andalusia: Saturday: Fly into Malaga through London (LHR) - 3 hour connection with different airlines Sunday afternoon: Go to Granada Monday/Tues: Granada Weds-Friday: Sevilla (stop over in Cordoba on the way??? Or leave Granada Tuesday night?) Saturday: go to Madrid for flight out early Sunday

Clearly #4 is the most complex. I do feel like we would be happy with anything, but would appreciate any opinions on the options.

Thanks in advance!

If Andalusia has been a bucket list type trip, you may want to head there given the time of the year of your travel. Often that destination can be quite hot, particularity May-September.

Andalusia is a little bit more "bucket list"....however I am torn between doing it as a mother-daughter trip vs bringing the whole family another time. Since this is a short trip, I hope to return because I feel we will love Spain.

I think I have a way to simplify Andalusia, as long as we could do a day trip to Cordoba from Seville.

Saturday: Fly into Madrid
Sunday afternoon: Train to Granada
Monday-Tuesday: Granada
Weds-Friday: Sevilla
Saturday: Train to Madrid
Sunday: Fly home

I suppose I could even reverse Granada and Sevilla for this option.

Since you don't have a ton of time, I would go with option 3. People massively undervalue Madrid, and Sevilla is magical. You're maximizing the time spent actually experiencing those places which deserve a lot of your time. I also had the thought you could fly USA to Gatwick and get a direct flight to Sevilla from Gatwick. That way, you don't have to retrace your steps on the train.

So, something like fly LGW to Sevilla, Sevilla 3 (or 4) full days, high speed train to Madrid, 4 (or 3) full days, fly out of Madrid. You could possibly do a stop over in Cordoba to see the mezquita if you can find a place to store your bags. No idea on how feasible that is, but it's cool to see and it's on the way. If you want, you could do Segovia or Toledo as a day trip in Madrid. It's pretty easy and they're both great.

I would say my only reservation is that central/Northern Spain could be a tad cold in December if you're sensitive to that. However, you're flying out from Madrid or Barcelona so maybe that's just a fact of life. It's not Minneapolis or something, you can just pack sensibly and it would be fine.

Thanks for the great feedback! I do think option 3 seems wonderful and less hectic than 4. The only hiccup is that getting to Gatwick is 3 connecting flights for most routes (there is a 2 flight option, but it isn't as reliable). So that means I am signing up for 4 flights to get to Sevilla if we went through Gatwick - no thanks. ;) I would go with 2 flights to Madrid plus the train to Sevilla.

My only sadness about option 3 is that we are so close to Granada but not seeing it....sigh!

Becky, Sevilla is amazing! The alcazar is lovely and the cathedral is really special and a must see. I believe the alcazar was based on the Alhambra. Members of the royal family occasionally stay at the alcazar. If you are interested in seeing the royal apartments, this needs to be booked well in advance. While I really enjoyed the Alhambra, my two favorite cities were Sevilla and Cordoba.

Thank you Jules!! I am super excited now! Strongly leaning towards option 3!

Thank you! Seville is a definite for us! We are trying to decide between Madrid with the day trip to Toledo vs Granada to see Alhambra. We probably don't have time for both.

Ok, I think I am cutting out Madrid and sadly Toledo. We need an excuse to return, right?

Here is my current thought:

Day 1: Fly into Seville from London, arrive early evening
Day 2-4: Seville
Day 5-6: Granada
Day 7: Cordoba
Day 8: Afternoon train to Madrid
Day 9: Fly home

This puts us in Seville during Dec 8th holiday. Since most attractions will have limited hours, we can make use of the closures to visit Plaza de Espana. Plus, the night before there are some communal celebrations that sound great.

I did Madrid Cordoba and Seville a few years ago. Your latest plan looks great, but I would say you don't need to stay overnight in Cordoba. It's very small and and has one great sight. Also if you can avoid a 1 night stay it will be less hassle. Don't underestimate the benefit of staying in fewer places especially for a short trip.

Thank you! I have considered a stop-over in Cordoba on the way to Granada instead of staying the night. It would look like this:

Day 1: Fly into Seville from London, arrive early evening
Day 2-4: Seville
Day 5: Stop over in Cordoba on the way to Granada
Day 6-7: Granada
Day 8: Afternoon train to Madrid
Day 9: Fly home

I've read a lot of pluses and minuses of the three options for Cordoba: Day trip from Seville, overnight, and stop over to Granada. I've eliminated the day trip because I don't want to back-track to Seville. I am a bit torn between the Cordoba overnight vs a stop over to Granada. I can really see pros and cons of each. I was a little scared off by the reports of tight locker space. I doubt my daughter and I will arrive super early in the morning.

Many spend multiple days in Cordoba. There is an excellent Jewish museum, a synagogue, the old white Jewish quarter is stunning, there is a Roman bridge over a picturesque river. There is also an Alcazar. I believe there is a walking tour in the Rick Steves guide. We spent about three hours in the Mezquita, some time in the pretty garden with the orange trees and did the tour to the top of the tower. We also walked to the interesting new downtown/commercial center. The Alhambra is amazing, Granada is interesting, but we did like the city of Cordoba more than Granada.

Toledo is interesting and different from Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada (because its not in Andalusia). With the amount of days you have, I'm still liking the idea of overnighting in Sevilla, Cordoba and Madrid or Toledo.

A vote here for your “current thought” itinerary with an overnight stay in Cordoba. Aside from the incredible Mezquita, Cordoba is a lovely city to wander and explore. Plus, one of our best meals in Spain was at Ermita de la Candelaria there. And, two nights in Granada is plenty for the Alhambra and a look around the city.

Have a great trip!

Thanks everyone! I wish I could spend more time in Cordoba, but I'm thinking an overnight might have to suffice. I so appreciate the feedback and information!
