It seems like there are SO many museums in Malaga Spain, we are going for 6 days. What are some of recommendations? Also do you recommend getting tickets in advance?
Thank you!
The Picasso Museum is a must - book ahead.
Carmen Thyssen (18th/19th C Spanish), CAC and Centre Pompidou (both modern) are also worth a visit.
The Motor and Fashion Museum is great - short bus ride from the centre - https://visita.malaga.eu/en/what-to-see-and-do/culture/museums/list-of-museums/museo-automovilistico-de-malaga-automobile-museum-malaga-p103369
You should also visit the Alcazaba and the Roman ruins.
In addition to the above, I enjoyed the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares, a small folk museum. I also went to the wine museum and was very UNimpressed. I loved the Thyssen in Malaga.
I agree with Chani as to the best two. You might be swayed by the weather and the fact that many are free at least one day a week: https://slowtravelitalyspain.blogspot.com/2020/01/malaga-what-to-see-and-do-free-31-ideas.html
In addition to the quite good Picasso Museum in Malaga, there is also the Picasso Birthplace Museum. That is utterly skippable and should be skipped. Far better to walk around outdoors than waste your time there.
It's a special-interest sort of place, but I liked the Museum of Glass and Crystal and recommend to fans of decorative arts.
For the Picasso museums in Malaga, if you are not a great fan, do some research on what is there. I have a moderate interest in Picasso, have been to the Barcelona and the Malaga museum, seen major works of his in a number of other museum, and enjoyed them. However, Picassos greatest paintings have been snatched up by museums and private collectors, the various museums were founded in conjunction with various heirs, and contain a more esoteric collection of items from his personal archives.
The Malaga museum does cover things from most of his career, lots of sketches and studies, a few of what could be major works, a beautifully done building, but not overly large. I rate it as interesting for a fan, or someone wanting to learn a bit about Picasso, but not a definitive museum about the artist. Still worth an hour or two for most people as long as you know what to expect.
