Museums in Madeid

We were in Madrid in February, 2025. I paid for Prada tickets so we had early morning entry and we spent about 5 hours there, including a brief stop for lunch at the cafe. I had reserved free tickets for Reina Sophia for that afternoon but we were too tired to go! But it didn't seem hard to get the free entry online. We really enjoyed the Archeology Museum.

I’ve never been to the Thyssen.

I’ve visited the others during their free hours. We lined up about 30-40 minutes before the free times. When the museums opened the line moved very quickly.

I feel the two hours free time is sufficient for those who are not necessarily museum or art lovers, but want to see them. Only you know if about 1.5 hours is enough time for you to see what you want.

I will add that I’ve been to each, the Prado and Reina Sofía three time. With the Reina it’s always been during the free hours. With the Prado, only the last visit was during the free hours.

I would get a timed entry to the Prado when they open so you can see the major works without a crowd. It's one of the major art museums in the world and some of the best paintings are among the most famous in the world so they can draw large crowds. Garden of Earthly Delights, the circular Velazquez room with Las Meninas and the Goya area, especially the black paintings and the 3rd of may, I would go early to see those before the crowds arrive.

Reina Sofia you could consider the free hours (also free at all times for people over 65+ fwiw).

There's also the option of the Paseo del arte combined ticket for the thyssen, Prado and Reina Sofia.

Archeology is also worth going too, as is the free Naval Museum north of the Prado.
