Hi,
My family is visiting Spain and Portugal and we enter via Madrid. We are two adults and a one year old baby. I was initially thinking of Madrid - Andalucia - Portugal (working from South to North) - Basque Country - Madrid in a clockwise manner. However, I have been reading here that there is no rail transport between Spain and Portugal and mostly the options are by car and bus. Our trip is 3 weeks long / short :)
I have some questions that I hope you can help me with:
Given the lack of inter-country rail links, would you recommend halving the trip to dedicate time see visit each country on its own before going to the next one? Would that be more time-efficient?
If Madrid would be the base of our travel, would what would be a good itinerary for Spain considering I want to see Madrid, the Basque Country and Andalucia? And any transport recommendations other than trains.
For Portugal, I am considering the Algarve and Porto in addition to Lisbon and Fatima. If I had to drop one of them to make the trip less hectic, which one would you let go of?
Because we have a baby with us, I'm thinking of doing Portugal first then finish up in Spain so that we can spend a few days in Madrid at the end of the trip in preparation for the flight home. Also, within regions we're considering moving around via bus for short trips between cities.
Thanks in advance!
