Most affordable transportation in Spain

We are considering renting a van to sleep in while visiting next Dec/Jan. Is this a viable option? Or would it be more affordable to travel by train and stay in conventional, low-cost rooms, etc.?

Thank you for your advice. We just learned of the "wild camping" rules and have also decided to stick with train travel and possibly renting a car for day trips so we can stop frequently and explore. :-)
