Any feedback on whether mosquitoes are extra problematic in southern Spain? One of our apartments noted that they have "mosquito netting on all the windows." Which begs the question, how bad could it be?
I hope that apartment also has AC.
We spent six weeks in southern Spain last September/October and had no particular issues with mosquitoes considering that part of the time was spent camping. Obviously mosquitoes could be a local problem. Where is the apartment? Mosquito netting at the windows is a plus in my opinion because you can leave the windows open without flies wasps and other undesirables getting in, not only mosquitoes. Probably just means someone lived full time in the apartment, not necessarily that it's a problem area.
We'll be there in June....
We have mosquitoes in Michigan, some summers worse than others. I'm wondering if it's a similar situation. Some articles I read seemed to indicate that they were extraordinarily bad. Then I search RS site and forum, and nothing came up. Which made me think it may be more like home rather than a sci-fi movie.
Southern Spain is a large area, so they could be a problem in some areas. Years ago, I lived on the Bay of Cadiz, and I don’t recall a mosquito problem. No AC in our apartment or mosquito netting on the windows. Used to sleep with the window open frequently; we just had the built in blinds rolled down.
Depends where you go, I don't remember any big problems with mosquitoes in any of the major towns in Andalucia, on the other hand, south of Sevilla are the large Guadalquivir Marshes, there are sure to be mosquitoes there.
There is also a very good detective movie about that Guadalquivir marshland area called La isla mínima (2014), it won the best film award at the Goyas (Spanish Oscars).
Never had a problem with mosquitoes on the coast of Andalucia or inland. The occasional bite from one or two ove a fortnight is the worst it's been.
shawn, have you been to Europe before? I personally think the citation you gave is related to the relative lack of window screens in much of Europe - in comparison with the United States, where they are taken for granted. (If you lived in New York City or Boston in an older apartment, and had to buy your own, you might not find them so "standard"!) I would not take it as a warning about insects.
Look, NYC is completely paved in all directions. But poor catch basin maintenance (to save ... taxes ...) and poor construction site hygiene has created (I mean in the last three years) occasional pockets of especially severe mosquito complaints in Manhattan, and not contiguous to Central Park or Riverside Park. Mosquitoes happen!
Another problem with city apartments in Europe can be street noise or bus and trolley noise at night.
Thanks all. It sounds like it might be much like Michigan: some places, some seasons are mosquito free while others are worse.
We've been to Europe many times, but never to southern Spain. We've rarely, if ever, seen screens in any of the airbnbs or house swaps we've stayed,
That's what piqued my interest -- that mosquito netting was coming up more frequently in my Spain housing searches than ever before.
