Has anyone traveled to Montserrat monastery on their own without taking a tour? We do not have a car, so would we would have to take the train. We are mainly interested in visiting the monastery and hearing the boys choir if we can get tickets. . We are going later in March and it states that there are no tickets available for the choir but I have emailed to see if we could possibly get 2 tickets.
Years ago (2006) we just took the train from town to the cable car that goes up to the monastery. We walked around on our own and left when we were ready. It was an easy trip.
Yes, we took the train from plaça espanya. Got off at the second montserrat stop and took the railcar up. We heard the boys choir, visited the madonna, the musuem, had lunch and wandered around on our own then took the railcar back. No tour needed. We didn’t need tickets to see the boys choir back then. We just showed up early. Things may have changed since then. But no tour needed.
A very large chunk of the +2 million annual visitors to Montserrat do so on their own, without taking a guided tour.
See if this old post of mine helps for DYIng... https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/spain/a-visit-to-montserrat-the-holy-mountain-near-barcelona-in-catalonia
