Montserrat grounds and hiking trails free of charge?

Hi,

I will be heading to Barcelona a few days post Christmas and i was wondering if i need a ticket to walk around the Montserrat grounds and hiking trails. I read somewhere that the Basilica needs tickets for tourists but if i am not going to visit the church / Madonna itself, then do i still need to pay to enter the Monastery?

Any advice is appreciated thank you.

I have been to Montserrat, which is high up on a steep hill. It took a cable car to get there.
If there are hiking trails, they would be quite steep.
If you go to the Monastery, take the train early and skip the crowds.

The hiking trails are not steep and they are not difficult if you take the funiculars and then hike from there. From what I remember, they are mostly paved and fairly level. I highly recommend the hiking trails. The views are spectacular. I especially recommend the one that leads to the little mountainside chapel, which is built into the holy cave where the Black Madonna was supposedly found. The Santa Cova funicular leads to that trail, which leads to the chapel.

Just to be clear - I think there may be a fee to go see the Black Madonna up close, but the trails and the grounds are free, but there is a ticket for the gondola or cog loco to go up and down to the grounds from the nearby train station. Plus you’ll be buying a train ticket from Barcelona.
