Montserrat Day Trip

Hello,

My friend and I will be in Barcelona for 4 days at the end of October and we would like to take a day trip to Montserrat and also see the Boys Choir perform. There seem to be a number of ways to get there via train and then a number of ways to get to the top (cable car, hike, ?). I would love to hear advice about the optimal way to get there and spend the time. I am also wary of all these websites now and would appreciate any particular links for transportation (I have the official link to Montserrat). I accidentally bought that Walker tour and got ripped off (although am contesting it through my credit card) and now am very wary. Thanks so much!

2 possibilities for an optimal way.
Both starts with a train (R5) from Plaçia Espanya

You can buy your tickets at the dispensers.
Destination Aeri Montserrat if you wish to take the cablecar (=Aeri) for the last portion. This ticket includes the R5 to Olesa de Montserrat and then the use of the Aeri.
Destination Montserrat if you wish to take the rackrailway (=Cremallera). This ticket includes the R5 to Monistrol de Montserrat where you get out, change track and continue on the Cremallera.

Thank you! These are wonderful posts with an incredible amount of information! I can't seem to make reservations because in the drop down menu where a country is required the USA is not listed as an option. Is there a way to navigate this that I am not seeing?

We did the train from Plaza Espana and cable car.
We took an early train and missed the heavy crowds.
I worked out very well.

I assume you are trying to make a reservation here https://reserves.abadiamontserrat.cat/en/560-reservations/2985-salve-and-virolai-escolanias-chant

The list of countries is for the citizens of one of the European Union states. Just look more at the bottom of the page and find 'Visitors from outside the European Union'. This will direct you to a dedicated page where USA is listed.

I was there last year and we also did the train from Plaza Espana and cable car. Cable car definitely the way to go. It was such a beautiful and dramatic ascent up to the site.
