We are a family of 6 with two seniors (great to walk just slower) and 2 children 9 and 11 visiting Barcelona next week. Is a trip to Montserrat worth it - would it be hot once we are there since most of it is outside? And is the aerial cable car scary? I think I've read that it's preferable vs the rail track which may not be good for motion sickness.
The wife and I are two seniors who went to Montserrat last year, and it was wonderful. We went in May. According to Google, the average temperature in Montserrat in June is high 70, low 55. Once you get up there, the two funiculars both lead to fairly easy, well paved hiking paths, which I definitely recommend.
I didn't feel the aerial cable car was scary. Additionally, the views are spectacular which is a distraction. We also did the hiking trails. Highly recommend though we felt the time estimates on the signs underestimated the length of the hike. At the time, we said, in Switzerland the time is measured by senior citizens, while in Spain, must be estimated by runners.
If anything, keep in mind heat and humidity... today I was myself out and about with friends somewhere in the Berguedà county... the heat, while not reaching the peaks of July or August, was considerable.
Loved Montserrat, recommend going early by taking the train from the station at Plaza Espania. Then take the cable car, it is not scary.
