Montserrat 1025–2025: A Millennium of History, Faith and Culture

I already published something about this a few months ago, but I think it’s worth refreshing now, since there are only three months left.

In 2025, Montserrat celebrates a truly historic milestone: one thousand years since the founding of its monastery. Known as the Mil·lenari de Montserrat, this anniversary invites visitors from around the world to discover not only the beauty of the mountain, but also the extraordinary cultural and spiritual heritage that has grown here for ten centuries.

A Thousand Years of Montserrat
The first community of monks settled at Montserrat in 1025, and over the centuries, the site has become one of the most important religious and cultural symbols of Catalonia. Pilgrims have long come to venerate the Mare de Déu de Montserrat, affectionately known as La Moreneta (“the Little Dark One”), while others are drawn to the dramatic mountain peaks, its music, or its art treasures.

What Visitors Can Experience
As in any regular year, visitors can:

  • Visit the Basilica to see the statue of La Moreneta.
  • Explore the museum, home to works by El Greco, Caravaggio, Dalí, and Picasso.
  • Enjoy the Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe.
  • Hike the mountain trails, taking in breathtaking views across Catalonia.

During this special year, Montserrat will host a wide program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures, and celebrations, highlighting its dual role as a place of spirituality and culture. From pilgrimages and solemn liturgical ceremonies to concerts, art and history exhibitions, lectures, and guided tours, to a drone show, which inaugurated the Mil·lenari last September. Visitors can also enjoy cultural workshops, family events, and themed hiking routes that connect the monastery’s spiritual heritage with the beauty of its mountain landscape—making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Montserrat in all its depth and diversity.

Why 2025 Is Special

The Millennium celebrations are not just about looking back—they are also about renewing Montserrat’s message for the future: a place where nature, art, music, and spirituality meet. For visitors, it is a unique opportunity to experience Montserrat at its most vibrant and meaningful moment in centuries. Whether you are a pilgrim, a lover of history, an art enthusiast, or simply a traveller in search of beauty, the Milenari de Montserrat is the perfect moment to discover—or rediscover—this extraordinary mountain and monastery.

Enjoy!
