Montserrat’s Escolania should not be understood as a tourist attraction with performances scheduled mainly for visitors. It is not. It is a centuries-old choir school, part of the religious and educational life of the monastery, where the boys study, train musically and sing as part of that formation.

That also means availability will always be limited. They have classes, exams, holidays, concerts, tours and other personal commitments, so there are days when they simply do not sing at Montserrat. “Not available” does not automatically mean “sold out”.

If you are lucky enough to hear them sing during your visit, it is better understood as a privilege of witnessing a living tradition, not as a tourist product that is guaranteed to be available every day.

Hi Enric, thanks for the insight. We know it's part of a religious ceremony so I assumed that's why days suddenly become available. I just keep checking because one never knows what becomes available. My husband is first generation Italian Canadian and we both Canadian as well as raised Catholic so understand as have similar things like that here. If we get to see them great but if not that's how it goes. We are still doing a full day in Monserrat following the tips of many Spanish YouTubers advice. We only have Sept 12 available to do Montserrat of the 5 days we are in Barcelona and that's "Spain Day" which I assume is a lot like "Canada Day" which is huge celebration in Canada. I think it will be fun as there will likely be lots of locals there, at least I am hoping there are, and we speak a bit of Spanish so hopefully we will meet some people.

Book in advance the things that are genuinely tourist attractions and depend on timed entry. For the Escolania, I would treat it differently: keep checking, and if they happen to be singing on the day you are there, wonderful. If not, then not.

Montserrat is absolutely worth a full day anyway, so I wouldn’t build the visit around the choir. Think of hearing the Escolania as a bonus, and a privilege if the timing works out.

I assume you mean 12 October, not 12 September.

And just one cultural correction: our National Day in Catalonia is 11th September, when we commemorate the defeat of 1714, the loss of Catalonia’s institutions and freedoms, and the forced assimilation into what is now Spain. The 12th of October is indeed Spain’s National Day, but, as you can probably imagine, Catalans do not exactly celebrate it with great enthusiasm. For most people here it is simply a public holiday, basically a Sunday with shops and offices closed.

You may see some official ceremony involving what I jokingly call the “occupation troops”, and perhaps a demonstration by a small fringe group of very enthusiastic Spanish nationalists celebrating their patriotism, but that is about it. Do not expect a Canada Day atmosphere, flags everywhere or the general population out celebrating Spain. For that you should be here on September 11th, our celebrations are something to see! :)

Montserrat may still be busier simply because it is a holiday, but not because Catalan families are heading there to celebrate “Spain Day”.

On a completely different note, for those of you coming to Barcelona and Catalonia this autumn: keep an eye on the weather. I recommend using meteo.cat, the website of Catalonia’s meteorological service. Not because they are prettier, friendlier or magically better than everyone else, but simply because their local information is usually the most detailed and useful for Catalonia.

This year we have had exceptionally high temperatures across Europe, a very warm Mediterranean, and the expectation is for a fairly lively autumn in terms of storms and other weather events.

And before somebody panics and cancels their holiday: no, I am not talking about biblical natural disasters. Well, not so far. I mean the sort of weather that can make you change the route you had planned that day, postpone a mountain excursion, or suddenly discover that the temperature is rather cooler than you expected.

Although, frankly, this year all we seem to do is break records: hottest days, hottest nights, highest sea temperatures... you get the idea. So check the forecast, particularly if you are planning Montserrat, hiking or anything outside Barcelona.

And if any of you happen to be one of those enthusiastic climate-change deniers, a small piece of friendly local advice: you may want to keep the lecture to yourself while you are here. We are rather busy living through the data.

Thanks for that info on Spain Day and luckily we are in Barcelona on the 11th and doing a walking tour with a local recommended by Ricks guidebook. It should be fun and informative by the sounds of it!

We also have had wildfires and a hot smoky summer and floods in other provinces.
British Columbia is a lot like Spain - mountains, storms, fires, floods, etc - we just continue on as prepared as we can be. It would take a lot for us to cancel since we are going to a wedding in Mallorca.

These days we have to expect anything. Point taken.
