Merida, Spain

Thinking of stopping in Merida on the way back to Madrid from Evora, Portugal. Has anyone spent time in this city? Understand it has many Roman ruins. Would appreciate advice on what to see and where to stay.

The Roman ruins in Mérida are numerous and spectacular. Well worth a vist. You are free to roam all around them. Extremadura Spain is a wonderful province for tourism and has many many "back door" opportunities. I don't know if you are traveling by car but if you have the time then try to fit in Cáceres, Trujillo and Guadalupe on your way to Madrid. You will absolutely think you have stepped back in time. In Mérida look into staying at the Parador de Mérida, a beautiful old convent. When looking for unique more rural places to stay in Spain do a search for "hoteles con encanto." In Trujillo I have stayed at Palacio Chaves Hotel. It was beautiful. Lots of old historical palacios and buildings have been converted into small hotels in this region. The plaza of Trujillo lit up at night was beautiful and very eerie. Guadalupe was one of the most picturesque small towns I have visited in Spain and is completely off the beaten tourism track.

I agree with the previous writer that this city is well worth a visit. The Roman ruins are extensive and are spread over a large section of the city. I'd suggest reading a bit about Merida's long history before visiting. Merida is located on the Spanish Via de la Plata, or Silver Route, which was an ancient road running north and south. If you continue a bit north of Merida, ancient Caceres contains a fascinating medieval quarter. Trujillo also merits a half day visit. If time permits, continue north to Salamanca.

The ruins are definitely worth a stop, but you might consider visiting the ruins, and continuing on and staying in in Salamanca for the night.
