My friends and I are traveling to Madrid from the US to Germany, where we connect on Lufthansa to Madrid. I arrive an hour earlier from Munich; they are coming from Frankfurt. I expect we will all be exhausted. Assuming our arrivals are one-time, I would prefer to meet them at the airport and head to our hotel together. Is this a good plan? If so, where should we arrange to meet?

I think Lufthansa lights operate from both terminals 1 and 2, which muddles things a bit.
Most European airports have a designated "meeting spot" in each terminal. Maybe plan to meet at the 'spot' in the terminal of their arrival, and you'll have that extra hour to figure out their arrival gate/terminal and make your way to that spot.
Or just at the arrivals door for their arrival terminal. There will be only one way out from baggage claim.
