My wife and I will be visiting Barcelona with our adult age (21 and 19 years old) children April 29th - May 4th. I am curious if May 1st being a national holiday will cause us problem due to closures, large crowds, etc. Does anyone know how a tourist's day is impacted on May Day. If it is a problem, does anyone have any recommendations (i.e. day trip to Montserrat, go to beach, etc.). Thanks!
It's like any regular Sunday... shops and business closed, many restaurants and most tourist attractions open though. The main difference with a regular Sunday are the rallies. They tend to be at noon and in the afternoon. They're peaceful marches. The routes will be announced a few days in advance, but Via Laeitana, from Plaça Universitat, towards Plaça Sant Jaume (where the centre of power in Catalonia resides: the Presidency of Catalonia and the City Hall of Barcelona) tends to be a firm candidate, but again, it's better to wait as they do change from time to time.
