Simple question ... Is is safe/recommended For a single woman to travel Spain alone. I am contemplating flying into Madrid, renting a car and driving. I am contemplating a road trip alone for a few weeks in September. Feedback is appreciated
I don’t think you will necessarily be unsafe as a solo woman in Spain. I’d encourage you to use common sense and if a situation feels uncomfortable, get out of it as soon as possible, just as you would here in the US. Having a daily check in with family or a friend is a good idea. Using an app such as Polar Steps not only helps document and share your journey, it also shows those you choose to share with your gps location.
How important is renting a car/driving to your trip? My opinion is that it is easier for a solo woman to travel by public transport than to drive solo in an unfamiliar country. It is hard to navigate and drive at the same time! Driving may be your thing, but I found Spain easy to get around by train and bus.
Great advice and thank you
I spent a few days Barcelona pre-cruise.
You possibly already know that you need to watch for pickpockets aka thieves. You want to get a sling bag or cross body purse.
Be cautious with all your personal possessions. The pickpockets are professionals. This is how some of them earn their living.
Athough I was only in Barcelona as well as cruise ports, i think pickpockets are a problem in most of Spain as well as some other European countries. But there is very little violent crime.
