March flight options - Seville

Hello, we are planning a trip to Spain for March 2024. This would be our first visit. Ideally, we'd like to focus on Seville and Andalucia as we figure the weather should be drier than Madrid. However, we are open to basing out of Madrid instead. We would have two adults and our eight year old son (his first European trip, but an otherwise good flyer/traveler). With work, school, and flight schedules, we'll probably only have seven actual visit days (land on Friday, fly out on Friday). We will be flying from the US via American/Iberia. We can't make a return flight from Seville because of a short 65 minutes connection at MAD before any flights back to US. Of these current flight options, which would you recommend?

1) Fly in/out of Madrid, arriving very early into Madrid at 5:45 AM. We could train to Seville, stay there four or five nights, then back to Madrid for two or three nights. Or we could base out Madrid and do Toledo or elsewhere for some nights out of town.

2) Fly into Jerez/out of Madrid. Jerez flight would connect via MAD and arrive at 8:35 AM. Would 100 minutes be enough time for immigration and flight connection in MAD? We could train directly to Seville for four/five nights, then back to Madrid for three/two nights.

3) Fly into Granada/out of Madrid. Arrive into Granada at 9:20 AM with a 2.5 hour connection at MAD. Two nights Granada, three nights Seville, two nights Madrid.

These two options are $300 - $400 more than the above three.
4) Fly into Jerez/out of Granada. This would allow us to maximize time in Andalucia. However, both the inbound and outbound connections at MAD are 100 minutes. Is this enough connection time?

5) Fly into Madrid/out of Granada. This would be the same 100 minute connection GRX - MAD - US flights.

Thank you to anyone who made it through the above post. Again, this would be our first trip to Spain, so we're excited to visit somewhere new and not necessarily tied down to any specific itinerary. Any and all advice is appreciated!

My advice is that Madrid works well, if you want at least a night in Madrid, since most of your locations are a short, fast train ride away, and Madrid likely would offer a direct flight to the US both coming and going. Catching an early morning flight in a smaller destination really does not save you much, if you then have a connection some place in Europe, before your US bound flight.

If cost does not go up drastically, and considering the cost of train tickets, then on your way over, fly into the smaller airport, even if you have a transfer in Europe, so flying into Granada/Jerez/Seville is fine, do a couple cities, and spend the last night or two in Madrid.

I’d go with option 1 if you’re set on going to Sevilla. Weather could be a factor in March. If this was my trip for March, I’d use Madrid as a base and take day trips, weather dependent, to places like Toledo, Segovia, or Alcalá de Henares. If you wanted to get away from Madrid you could take a train to Salamanca, Plasencia, or Cáceres for an overnight.

The airport in Jerez de la Frontera is very small and outside the city. The only recent time I’ve flown into and out of it, we had a rental car. Before flying into or out of it, check the train schedule. It’s possible it doesn’t run as early as might need it to. Sevilla is an hour’s car ride from Jerez’s airport.

In September it took us 1.5 hours upon arrival to clear immigration in Madrid. Normally it’s much less time.

Thanks for the great replies so far.

I've looked at Malaga, but unfortunately it doesn't give us great options because we'd have to connect in Dublin, so we're not saving any time or flight legs.

All of the above flight options would require one connection in the US, then connecting or terminating in Madrid. Our airport doesn't have any directs to Europe.

The more I think about it, and based on the input here, our two best options are probably numbers 1 and 3. Either a roundtrip ticket to/from Madrid (#1), or open jaw to Granada and return home from Madrid (#3).

From a comfortable (not too rushed) itinerary standpoint, what would you recommend?
1) Staying and hubbing out of Madrid exclusively, as Paul mentioned?
2) Arrive into Madrid, but immediately train to Cordoba or Seville, then back to Madrid before departure? Something like 2 nights Cordoba, 3 in Seville, 2 in Madrid? Or 4 Seville and 3 in Madrid?
3) Fly into Granada, 2 nights Granada, 3 in Seville, 2 in Madrid?

Regarding weather, do you think we'd be better in Seville or Madrid? Considering that it's currently 3*F outside my house at this moment, cool weather in March isn't as concerning as wet weather.

Taking the RS Andalucía tour in the fall with Seville as the final stop. I decided to round trip in/out Madrid. My flights will be nonstop in both directions. The cost is much cheaper too. I plan to spend several days in Madrid upon arrival. The trains from Madrid to Cordoba and from Seville to Madrid airport are reasonable. The net cost even with a one night hotel stay when returning home is substantially less expensive than round trip to Seville.

Does "March" mean "around Easter"? Holy Week is a very big deal in Andalucia, driving up hotel prices sharply in some cities (most definitely including Seville) and extending cancellation periods.

For a March trip I'd want to maximize my time in Andalucia and minimize the time in Madrid. Seville averages 9 degrees (F) warmer in the daytime and 6 degrees warmer at night. It also usually receives less rain--though rain doesn't look like it's a big problem in Madrid, either.

I have no experience changing planes in Madrid, so I won't comment on that aspect of your choice.

You'll have only six full, non-jetlagged days in Spain, though I gather this isn't a first trip to Europe, so you may know that you handle the overnight flight rather well. If you decide to return from Madrid (what I would probably do, especially if it saved me a worthwhile amount of money), part of the sixth day will be spent on a train heading back to Madrid. I'd be inclined to limit the trip to Seville, Cordoba and minimal time in Madrid.

Cordoba could be a 2-night stop, a day trip from Seville, or a day-long visit on the way back to Madrid, with luggage stored somewhere in Cordoba while you're sightseeing. I can understand the siren song of the magnificent Alhambra, though. Including Granada would mean skipping Cordoba, I think, unless you're willing to settle for just visiting the Mezquita.

Alhambra tickets need to be purchased well in advance. That would be especially true around Easter/spring break. Don't neglect that if you decide to make Granada part of your itinerary.

In Seville you'll want to avoid the long ticket lines at the Alcazar (buy tickets online) and the Cathedral (buy combo tickets at the nearby Church of El Salavador).

The good news is that we're traveling prior to Holy Week, likely March 7-15, so we'll hopefully avoid those crowds.

The warmer weather in Andalucia is definitely a factor in choosing it over Madrid, and I'm OK skipping Madrid altogether, except that we might have to backtrack to catch a return flight back to the US. Traveling back to Madrid would lose us about half a day of travel, as you mentioned, which isn't ideal but might be necessary. All return flights from either Seville or Jerez only have a 65 minute connection to make the US flight.

Given the short time "on ground" in Spain, I'd be happy concentrating on Seville and Cordoba. The tricky part is trying to find the flight options that best allow that itinerary.

Yes, it's all well and good to say "Fly back from your last sightseeing stop", but sometimes the schedules are bad or the cost is prohibitive. I flew into Madrid in 2019 even though I was headed for Andalucia, because I saved $500 by doing so (without changing my return flight, which was from London).
