Planning a last minute cruise that ends in Barcelona on 7/13 and flying to Mallorca to arrive at 12:30 pm. I was thinking of staying at a hotel on the South-East side of the island which looks like it has wonderful beaches (near Cala Santanyi, or possibly Calo Llombard) but am a little afraid of getting there by bus on a Sunday. One site I went to said there weren’t any buses until evening ( leaving from airport) but it seems ride shares can’t access the airport either?? I’m staying only 3 nights but would like to get to my accommodation as quickly as I can to enjoy Mallorca beaches as soon as I can. I realize it would be easier with a car but rental prices and insurance seem pricey and I watched a YouTube video where they said some things were stolen out of their rental car and they learned ( from police) that thieves target rentals. Any recommendations? Are Southeastern beaches the best ones?
You could stay near Palma and get the best of all worlds. There is a beach and some beach clubs to the east of town.
I agree with staying in Palma- we did this last year and there is a very extensive bus network that leaves from Palma bus station that can take you to the beach. We liked the ones on the northwest of the island.
The beaches in the southeast are generally considered the best. Whilst Palma does have a beach it does get very busy (it currently has around 6000 sunbeds) whereas the beaches in the south are often located in nature reserves meaning they're much less developed and are quieter.
I have no knowledge of the bus schedules as I've never used public transport in Mallorca. You could take a taxi to Cala Santanyi but it would cost around €150, you could rent a car for not much more. In 20 years of renting cars in Mallorca I've never experienced any problems with theft or any other criminal behaviour so don't let that Youtube video put you off renting a car.
It all depends on your priorities. If it was my first time to the island with only three nights and no car I would base myself in Palma, good restaurants, nightlife, sites and a decent enough beach. If it was all about the beach then I would head south and base myself there.
