Mallorca in June

My husband and I are planning a last minute trip to Spain in June. We went to Portugal last summer and loved it! We are considering Mallorca- seems like we could fly into Barcelona and take a ferry- is that the best way? Looking for advice on if there is a particular area of the island that is better to stay, plan to look at airbnbs. Would appreciate any and all information! Thank you!

Fly into Barcelona and take a connecting flight to Palma rather than mess around with a ferry.

Whereabouts to stay on the island depends on what your interests are however very few parts of the island are more than an hours drive away.

I would not recommend an airbnb or other similar rental accommodation. There is a lot of anger within the island and elsewhere in Spain and Europe regarding the lack of affordable housing of which holiday lets have exacerbated. There were demonstrations against tourists using such accommodation last year and more protests planned for this year.

I'm very fond of the island and I refuse to stay in an airbnb but rather stay in hotels or resorts that were purpose built for tourists and which provide employment for locals.

I would also fly. You could break up the trip and take a low cost carrier, or just see what your options to book all the way there are. I saw good one-stop flights to PMI when I checked but have not make it there yet.
I am agnostic on accommodations, but I did read this morning that mass protests are planned for June 15 so try to avoid traveling that day, or whatever might cause you inconvenience. I have seen some gorgeous boutique hotels on the island in magazines so I'd keep my options open but I also prefer apartment rental.

I might be strange, but I think a ferry ride (fast ferry ~4 hrs) might be a great adventure. A flight will be fast and relatively inexpensive, but a ferry - for me - is a rare "something new" situation.

I also second the "stay in established hotels" suggestion. As a cyclist, Majorca seems to have a great deal of boutique hotels that focus on bike rides but also wellness in general. If we return there, those are the ones I would seek out.

I'm not sure where you got "stay in established hotels from", are boutique hotels not "established hotels"? My suggestion was to avoid staying in private holiday lets and to stay in a hotel or resort, boutique or otherwise.

Yes - a "boutique hotel" would be a subset under the broader "established hotel" set. My feeling being that hotels are...hotels, and as such not like an AirBnB or similar that pull housing stock out from under locals. My preference within the hotel set - in Majorca specifically - is the more cycling-specific boutique hotels that have a focus on my interests.

So, I think I am in full agreement with "to stay in a hotel or resort, boutique or otherwise."

Thank you for all that information!
I am currently looking into flights to Mallorca and they are very reasonable indeed! I will definitely look into hotels. Does anyone have any favorite hotels to recommend?

Also, if we spend our first night in Barcelona, planning to leave early evening for Mallorca the next day should we stay right near the airport or in the city center so we can do some sight seeing?

We are staying at Hotel Helios apartments on Mallorca end May..They rent bikes and are 5 min walk to beach Can Pastilla and nice bike path right there too. Quick bus to Palma and airport nearby. Beautiful pool , dining , bar. Reviews are fabulous. Our flights from Barcelona were over $250 - prices have been really going up the last 6 weeks, luggage is expensive. I read the local govt would like to limit flights due to over tourism. They have my sympathy.

We are still trying to decide what town to look for a hotel in. Can someone recommend a less touristy (this coming from a tourist, haha!) coastal town? Thank you!

The main touristy towns are Magaluf, S'Arenal, Alcudia and Cala D'Or and I would avoid those although the old town of Alcudia is worth a visit.

Have a look at www.abc-mallorca.com which is full of useful information and has guides to all the main towns and villages.
