Hello. My family of 5 (we have three kids in their early 20's) will be travelling to Mallorca in July. We plan to stay 9 nights-we want to stay in Palma, Soller and looking for one more location to stay for a few days. I wanted to ask for hotel recommendations in Soller-close to town but also access to pools/beach and also a recommendation for third stop. Thank you!
Is there a reason you'd stay three different places in Mallorca in nine days? It seems a lot like hard work to me moving around so much. It's not that big an island. Would you consider picking one nice place and maybe renting a car?
I've only been to Mallorca in my youth with family, but we have a forum contributor who has been there a lot, and quite recently. Hopefully he may see this in the morning and offer some advice.
I suspect that I'm the forum contributor that Gerry referred to and I also agree with his question regarding three separate locations in nine days. There's no need to stay in different locations as everywhere on the island can be reached within an hours drive. Changing location three times simply means wasting precious vacation time. You're only there for nine nights so maximise your time. I've been visiting Mallorca for over 20 years, often twice a year so I can assure you that you'll regret having to spend time packing, checking out, checking into new accommodation, unpacking etc when you could be doing something far more interesting.
I don't have any recommendations for hotels as I stay at a timeshare that we own however I would recommend that you opt to stay in Port de Pollença and rent a car. Driving is a breeze in Mallorca and having a car will open up the entire island for you.
Hi JC, looks like you’re the person to talk to about Mallorca. We’re going in May, there is 4 of us all adults and we’re debating if we should get a car? My husband and I always do while traveling in Europe but the other couple never do and they’re really trying to convince us that we shouldn’t rent this time (they have never been to Mallorca). So please tell me what do you think? We have made a reservation in Cala Anguia Cala Mendia. Thank you for any input in advance.
Hi Edy,
May is a fantastic time to visit Mallorca, it's probably my favourite and I'll be there this coming May as well. I strongly urge your friends to consider renting a car. Mallorca is a very easy place to drive, the busiest places are Palma and Manacor however there is a very large underground car park situated on the main road into Palma which is perfect if you want to explore the city as it takes you out on foot to the spectacular cathedral. Obviously I don't know what your plans are but I'm assuming you're not intending to lounge by the pool every day and you'll want to explore the island. Whilst there is a public transport system on the island I've never used it and it's not as extensive as services on the mainland. It looks like public transport is very limited for where you're staying. For example, if you wanted to visit Soller you would need to take a taxi to nearby Portocristo and then two buses to Soller with a travel time of around 2 1/2 hours. By car it's just over an hours drive. You'll also find a car beneficial if you want to visit all the small coves and beaches around the island and there are a number of wineries on the island, some with very good restaurants which you'll find difficult to reach without a car.
If I was staying in Palma then I wouldn't have a car however that would restrict my options for what I could do. Visiting Mallorca isn't like visiting other big cities in Europe where it makes sense to travel around on public transport. Mallorca is an island which is mainly rural interspersed with lots of towns and villages, it's simply too restrictive to explore the island solely via public transport.
