With limited time in December, thinking of spending a few days in Malaga before heading to Madrid. Would love to see the Alhambra, and wondering if it is worth it to do as a day trip with an established tour from Malaga. Could travel to Granada separately and stay a night, but so much easier not to change cities/hotels. Thoughts?
I’m staying in a nearby beach resort to Malaga on November 2018 and I’m making a day trip out of Alhambra by driving myself. It’s an easy freeway drive according to multiple reviews I’ve read from my resort and I plan to carefully study the directions to public parking. A car in Granada needs to be parked ASAP to avoid going in restricted parts of the city. A tour I think would be fabulous with a very early departure time from your Malaga hotel. You need 3 hours at least to see Alhambra. I believe an 1 1/2 hour drive there justifies a day trip to Alhambra. Malaga has easily assessable AVE trains to Madrid so I would return as Granada doesn’t have convenient trains to Madrid as I just checked the Renfe site. Have fun and don’t miss Granada!
As long as your tour GUARANTEES that you will get Alhambra tickets for a full visit (including the Nasrid Palace), a day tour from Malaga to Granada can work. Any other arrangement (wording such as "you have the option to see the world famous palace at the Alhambra") means a very high likelihood of missing out, so I wouldn't do it.
Granada is an easy day trip from Malaga. Start early and stay late. Parking is also easy, just go to the public lots located at the top of the hill closest to the main entrance. Check the Alhambra site for ticket availability.
