Hi, we are flying direct into Malaga for 4 nights- renting a car and covering Marbella, Caminito del Rey, Picasso Museum, Alhambra, Mijas/Frigiliana, Nerja. Plan was to then take train to Cordoba and stay a night. Then train to Seville for 3 nights. Is the stop in Cordoba warranted? Or should I do a day trip from Seville and make Malaga 5 nights and more leisurly.
You need to time out each day to see what is achievable. I imagine Caminito is a full day. Alhambra is a full day. So that leaves one other full day for the rest.
I believe your train (train/bus?) from Malaga would go to Cordoba first regardless, so you could store bags and see Cordoba en route if that is what you decide to do.
I loved Cordoba, but we can't always stay everywhere!
Not sure how many days you will have in total or when you will be traveling? In September 2023, we did a self-drive trip through Andalucia arriving to/departing from Malaga:
Arrive Malaga - 2n
Arriate (after walking El Caminito del Rey) - 1n
Pueblos Blancos to Arcos de la Fronters - 1n
Tarifa via Gibraltar- 1n
Cadiz - 1n
Sevilla -3n
Cordoba - 2n
Granada - 2n
Nerja via Frigiliana- 2n
Depart from Malaga
Depending on your constraints, you may be able to tailor a similar route to meet your preferences. The highlights of our trip were the El Caminito del Rey, the Mezquita in Cordoba, and the rooftop tour of the Sevilla Cathedral. We also enjoyed Malaga, Tarifa, Sevilla and a quick stop in Frigiliana. We have not been to Marbella. Beaches in Nerja are nice but Nerja has very much an expat, versus Spanish, vibe.
Bottom line, yes, Cordoba is very much worth an overnight stay: the Mezquita is, literally, awesome; the city is relaxed and lovely for wandering; food is exceptional.
