Malaga or Marbella

I am looking to spend one day/night of our 10 day trip to Spain on the coast. We will be flying out of Malaga on the following morning, so we prefer to be in Malaga or somewhere close.

We are not looking for any particular tourist sites, but just want a relaxing day/evening in a town on the Mediterranean for walking/running along the seashore, visiting interesting shops, and a nice restaurant for dinner.
We will have a car and will return it to the airport on the following morning.

The Old Town section of Marbella is lovely and very different from the new section. We had a lovely stay in the Old Town section and enjoyed a very small, local restaurant for dinner. The shops appear to be locally owned and offer quality merchandise.

The new section of Marbella was seemingly full of yachts, high-end luxury shops, large hotels, lots of traffic and high-end auto dealerships (at least that was our impression via car and then later on a short walk down to the sea).

We were only in Malaga for a drop-off at the airport, so I can't offer a comparison.

Marbella's Old Town is relatively small and whilst pleasant it doesn't really offer much for a tourist. The other side of Marbella is as Keith described. A horrible place full of people I prefer to avoid. The rich, the wannabe rich and the parasites who hang off them. The place is also quite tired, dated and cliched, it has nothing going for it at all. Opt for Malaga.

Malaga for sure and stay at the Parador, we just did and would do again in a heartbeat.
