Madrid with toddler

My husband and I will be visiting family in Valencia next week. We fly in and out of Madrid. We usually take a 4 day side trip while we are there (I was thinking Cinque Terre) but my husband has suggested we just spend a few days in Madrid before flying out. We would obviously go to the Prado, but otherwise are not big on museums. Can anyone suggest anything to do that would be not necessarily child focused, but good with a 15 month old in tow? And where is a good area to stay?

Not too far from the Prado and also close to the Puerta de Atocha rail station is El Retiro Park. It is huge and free--a place where your little one could burn off some energy. Also in that area is a botanical garden with a relatively modest entry charge, but I don't think it would work terribly well for such a young child.

I'm sure there are some great options elsewhere in the city, but I'm not tuned into things for children.
