I will be going to Madrid in a couple of months with my wife and two girls (10 and 12). After reading about Madrid it seems that Madrid might not be the best city for kids. Everything is really late, tapas bars, bullfight... not even sure about flamenco and zarzuela. It is all sounds like a dream for me and my wife but probably not suitable for kids. Anyone had experienced Madrid with kids? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
The old tourist zone of madrid is within a relatively small area. You will find Parc Retireo complete with a lake where you can rent a boat and paddle around. There are public markets with wonderful foods and candies. Zapas! Nothing like having some inexpensive custom leather shoes being bought for your girls. Oh yeah, there is a king's castle and some very cool places for the family to experience. Allow your girls to pick out things of interest at the tapas bar by having them point tonthe items.
However, have you the time/option to go to another city?
I have a week so I am thinking about Toledo and Segovia.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I think the girls would enjoy Madrid. It's a wide-open city ( wide boulevards) that handle the crowds, the aforementioned park is great and the Palace allows visitors to get closer to the displays than most. The Prado is amazing and if you've talked about what they will see ahead of time, it will make it even more meaningful. We went to the flamenco performance that is mentioned in the RS guidebook and I don't remember it being that late.
We just came back from Madrid, and we did not have a lot of time (as we were on a soccer trip), but my son and I rented electric bikes which he liked, loved the Mercado San Miguel, biking in Retiro Park, found the secret cookie nuns, walked around. I visited the Reina Sofia and I could see a couple of young girls liking that. Toledo was beautiful as well and had a fun zipline!
How many days are you there?
Kim
Total 8 days, but thinking about spending 1 day in Segovia and 2 in Toledo
When are you going?
When are you going?
End of July unfortunately :-)
Ouch
Seriously I cannot over emphsize the need to start hydrating the day prior to arrival. And then drink till you implode. Fyi El Corte Ingles is Spains equal to Macy's. Bathrooms are found on the second floor in the corners. Many offer a full grocery market in the basement. Need an air conditioning break? Head to El Corte Ingles to check out this store.
I don't know if your girls enjoy musicals (Frozen?), theater, or operetta, but the zarzuela we saw in November 2013 actually started pretty early, and so got out relatively early, too. Not sure they still have shows during July, though. And you can get supper on an "American" schedule - just don't expect there to be too many locals having dinner with you if it's really early for Spain.
Toledo's a nice and convenient day trip from Madrid, and Segovia is truly wonderful . I'll bet your hijas will marvel at the aqueducto. You may have reasons for your plans, but I'd personally spend 1 day in Toledo and 2 in Segovia, of you only have 3 days between the two.
Thank you for suggestions. I still have time and I can change my iternary so I will continue with research
