Madrid/Toledo Train Tickets

We have Ave train tickets from Barcelona to Madrid on 9/19, arriving in Madrid at 17:55. We are going on to Toledo immediately. How much time should we allow to make that train? There's an 18:50 train on to Toledo. Is that enough time? Is the AVE train from Barcelona to Madrid likely to be late? Should we book the 19:50 train to Toledo instead? Should we book ahead? or closer to the date?

Thanks for any input you can give.

The AVEs are rarely late because you are entitled to your fare returned if they are, (I think late by ten minutes) and yes as far as I am concerned, ticket in hand, you have plenty of time but I know the station. Take the later train and enjoy the garden surroundings and something to eat, perhaps.
'Should we book ahead? or closer to the date?' - if you want peace of mind you purchase ahead of time.

I did that trip in reverse. You have plenty of time, and should definitely book ahead to ensure the train you want isn't sold out.

One important tip. The AVE from Barcelona arrives on the upper level of Atocha station, while the AVE to Toledo leaves from the lower level. To get between these, be sure to ask for the elevator connecting the two waiting areas (it's outside, near the high number tracks). This way, you won't get lost in that very confusing station, and you won't have to go through security again.

Thanks, Harold, for the very useful info If we have our tickets in hand, do you think we have enough time to catch the 6:50 pm train to Toledo or should we catch the 7:50 pm train? Also, the trains to Toledo say they are Avant not AVE. Is that the same thing?

Penny,
If your AVE train arrives at Puerta de Atocha station @ 17:55, you have plenty of time to connect with the AVANT train departing to Toledo at 18:50.

AVANT trains are high speed trains designed for short journeys.

Travel time to Toledo (from Madrid) is about 30 minutes. I'd buy my tickets to Toledo a few days before departure at any train station in Spain. If you will be returning to Madrid, you should buy your return tickets as well. You may also store your luggage at the Atocha train station & just take what you need for your Toledo visit.

Enjoy your trip!

I agree with Priscilla, you have plenty of time. I had only 37 minutes, and had lots of time to spare (my departing train wasn't even ready for boarding yet!). So with a full hour, plan on catching up on your reading, buying a snack, etc.
