Has anyone taken the train from Madrid to Toledo? Is one day sufficient? Leave first thing in the morning and return the last train at 9:30pm?
Janette,
We visited Toledo as a day trip from Madrid & enjoyed it very much.
It's an easy 30 minute train ride. You can take the bus from the train station up to the city center.
We plan to stay in Toledo, instead of Madrid, the next time we travel to Spain via Madrid.
Enjoy your trip!
EDIT: You may want to buy your train ticket(s) 1-2 days prior to your trip, or in advance online, to avoid long lines at the Atocha train station.
What Priscilla said. Stop in the tourist office across from the Cathedral to get a map and information on sights. Enjoy!
I asked a similar question back in April. On the advice of many on this forum we ended up changing our plans and spending 3 days in Toledo, instead of making it just a day trip from Madrid. It was the best advice we got. Toledo is an amazing place, especially later in the day and evening after all the tour buses and day trippers are gone. So for us - it was great, 3 nights in Toledo and we were only in Madrid for 2 nights - the day we arrived and a full day seeing the sights. Afterwards, from Toledo we headed to Seville - and we timed it so we easily connected in Atocha station.
Ultimately, you have to balance the timing between Madrid, Toledo, and other destinations you want to see within however much total time you have. If you can only afford one day, it will be a great day.

Having been to Toledo twice I recommend spending the night. During the day it is packed with visitors; the evenings are beautiful, quiet, unforgettable.
I was leaning to stay 1 night in Toledo? Does anyone have any good suggestions for hotel stay in Toledo.
Alternatively does it make sense to stay in Madrid and make a day trip and leave Toldeo late in the night back to Madrid?
For ashishmendiratta: Hotel Pintor El Greco in Toledo. Lovely - exposed beams, stonework walls - quiet, comfy rms with views, nice staff, exc. breakfast.
Thanks Stewart
We spent a month in Spain last fall, including two nights at one of my favorite private rentals ever. I had been to Toledo 40 years ago, and always wanted to return. This house is amazing, and the host, Marife, is just lovely. She doesn't speak a lot of English, but it didn't matter, she was so good to us. The place is spotless, by the way:

Does anyone have a recommendation for a hotel or apartment close to the Madrid airport. We have a early flight out and i just need somewhere cheap for one night.
We are planing to travel from Seville to Barcelon in October.Train or air?
