I will be in Madrid in March and have already planned a stop in Granada. Where would you suggest I go in between Madrid and Granada as I have 1-2 extra days with space to fill.

If you have 1-2 extra days - Cordoba 100% hands down, it is already conveniently on the AVE high speed train line, halfway between Madrid and Granada.

Have you already booked your Alhambra tickets?
Unfortunately there are no 'Alhambra General' tickets left for the month of March, however, there are a few Dobla de Oro General tickets still available.
Make sure to book your tickets ASAP before they are all sold out!

If you're too late to get Dobla de Oro tickets for your potential dates in Granada, check to see whether the Granada Card has Alhambra access available for one of those days. It will cost a bit more, but it covers more (hope you'll have time to take advantage), and it's worth it if this is your best chance to see the Alhambra.
