Madrid Taxis

Do most taxis in Madrid take credit cards? We'll use the Metro after we get settled, but we prefer to take a cab from the airport to the hotel.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think all Madrid official taxis have to accept credit/debit cards. An official one is white with a red stripe. From the airport, make sure you go to the terminal's proper taxi rank and ignore anyone offering a "cheap ride" whilst you walk there. Despite speaking very bad Spanish, I also usually show the driver my credit card when I get in so he knows tricks like claiming the machine is broken when we arrive won't work (most are honest, but not all). The fare is a flat fee to the city centre, no supplements.

I'm also interested in taking a taxi from the airport to my hotel. What is the airport lay out like in terms of taxi pick ups? Also how can I make sure I am charged the flat fee, is there a booth or a line for cabbies that play by the rules?

Hi Andrew. I just returned from Madrid. Outside the arrivals hall you will see the taxis. Go to the front of the line. Before I got in the taxi, I asked the driver how much to the city center. It was 30 euros. The taxi did take credit cards, but I had euros on me, so I paid with euros.

Yes, they do. And the fixed rate from the airport to the city center is 30 Euros.
