Madrid & Southern Spain

We are going to be in Spain late June for a few days are are considering this itinerary to explore southern Spain:
Day 1 - Arrive Madrid (1.5 days exploring Madrid).
Day 2 - Madrid.
Day 3 - Day trip from Madrid to Toledo.
Day 4 - Train to Seville (1.5 days there exploring).
Day 5 - Seville.
Day 6 - Day trip from Seville to Cordoba.
Day 7 - Spend in Seville.
Day 8 - Day Trip to Ronda or Cadez.
Day 9 - Fly to Bilboa from Seville (to meet a hiking tour group).

Our main interests are exploring culture, local foods, hiking, sightseeing, getting a good feel for local history and life. Less important are museums. We are active travelers who like to explore.

Appreciate all thoughts and input. Should we do different daytrips from Seville (we wanted to try an eliminate hotel transfers as much as possible)?

Looks like a lovely trip! I don't see Granada (alhambra). Personally I enjoyed that more than Ronda or Cadez. Still others find seeing the Alcazar enough-- it's in a similar vein.

Check out the daily avg. temps to make sure you're okay with the potential heat. But I think you'll have a great time. Are you doing Camino del Norte with your hiking group? If so, I'm envious!

Happy travels.

Hi Jeff, we’re in Spain again now and enjoying it very much!

We will be ending this trip in Sevilla and Madrid after a week in our current location, Cadiz.

Since you’re not interested in the museums in Madrid, you might want to do a city bike tour to get to know the history & sites. I think it’s easier to jump into the tapas scene by doing an evening food tour, also.

Since you’re going through Cordoba to get to Sevilla, maybe just stop on the way and not take an extra day later to backtrack.

We’re enjoying Cadiz a lot, so it would be on my list. If you have extra time because Cordoba was on the way, definitely go see Ronda, too.

Very workable. Should be a good trip. With regard to Ronda or Cádiz, go to the one that’s easier to get to. In late June, every place on your itinerary will be crowded with tourists.

The website timeanddate.com offers actual, historical, day-by-day weather data for many cities worldwide. I always check its information--usually five years' worth--when in doubt about a place I plan to visit. Southern Spain can be beyond miserable in June, and Madrid can also be very hot.

Seville weather -- June 2023

Madrid weather -- June 2023

It's important to look at more than one year's data. Use the pull-down box to the right, just above the graph, to change the month and year displayed. Use the Search box at the upper right to change the location.

I'm concerned that your entire trip is in Madrid and points south, where you could conceivably have no breaks at all from unremitting heat.

This past September, we enjoyed Cadiz much more than Ronda which was totally overrun with tourists. Cadiz was uncrowded, pleasant and relaxing. Had great local food there at Arrebol.

Thanks for the great info so far.

We will be in Portugal ahead of going to Spain and then hiking in the Pyrenees for 10 days after the south Spain part of our trip. We are hoping we can put up with the heat for 8 days. Looks like Seville could be 90 something to over a 100.

It definitely can be over 100F. In Andalucia that's not an anomaly these days.
