Madrid site passes

We will be a month in Madrid in May. I'm confused about the museum passes. If I get a Paseo de Arte, do I get to enter the three museums whenever and skipping the lines? Is this the best pass for us? Also, just saw an "Annual State Museum Card" for 36.06 euros good for one year for the three main museums plus many more. The site says you can not buy it in advance but buy it at the ticket office. What office?

We are going to Madrid in September and are looking at the different passes at esmadrid.com. They also have a pass for entrance to 5 homes which is more up our alley. But when I click on the pass, the page it takes me to is in Spanish only. My husband reads Spanish but it is frustrating because I do the planning. Anyway, I am also looking for clarification about purchase. He reads that you cannot purchase it online, only in person. He says you can buy it at any of the museums. Maybe Carlos will chime in and help.

Barbara, try right-clicking on the Spanish page. One of the options will probably be "Translate to English".

@barbara - a loose gist: tickets can be purchased for 12€ at any of the 5 houses’ ticket offices. You will be able to visit the houses anytime within a 10 day period. You’ll also receive a loyalty card good for a year allowing free entrance to the houses on Saturdays for the holder and a companion along with other advantages and promotions. A map of the houses’ locations and opening times. There doesn’t seem to be an English site. Most have free entrance times, mostly on either Saturday or Sunday.

Here’s what the site says for the Paseo de Arte pass. “The card grants one visit to the permanent collection of each of the three museums on the Paseo del Arte (Art Walk): the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía. The pass is valid for one year from the date of purchase at the ticket office or from the date selected if purchasing online.

If you buy the pass from one of the museum’s websites, once you arrive in the city you must pick it up from that same museum’s ticket office. You will then be able to visit all three museums without the need to queue. ” No waiting in line.

For the Annual state pass: “ Annual State Museums Pass: with this card you can visit the following state museums as many times as you wish: Museum of Romanticism, National Museum of Anthropology, National Museum of Decorative Arts, Garment Museum, Cerralbo Museum, Museum of the Americas, National Archaeological Museum, Sorolla Museum, Prado Museum and the Reina Sofía Museum.
The pass is valid for one year from the date of purchase. You can buy it at the ticket office and start using it straight away, but it can't be purchased in advance and can only be collected on the day of your visit. To get into the museums, you must show your pass together with photographic ID (essential to prove that you are the pass holder).”
You can but it at the ticket office at any of the museums.

Those passes are very well-priced. The Annual State Museum Card is great because it doesn't limit you to one visit per museum. The Prado's large enough that spreading it over two (or more) visits is a good idea if you're in town long enough to do that.

I went to the Prado twice in 2015. One visit was on Museum Day when (unbeknownst to me) the museum was free. Even then there wasn't a significant line. The museum wasn't particularly crowded, either. There were only two paintings with a bunch of people standing in front of them.

Museum Day is usually May 18. It's worth checking locally to see whether there will be freebies of interest to you.

Thanks for the information! I am buying passes for five, so wanted to make sure. I will certainly post about our trip when we get back. This has been very helpful. By the way, is 36,06 euros equal approximately $40?
