Madrid’s Atocha Train Station Now Named “Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes”

In case you missed it, Madrid’s Atocha train station, which has been undergoing a massive remodeling project, was officially renamed “Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes” in honor of the prize-winning Spanish author who died in 2021.

@Nigel

About as much of a mouthful as Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport... lol.

Speaking of Atocha train station, we will be arriving there early on Oct 23 but cannot check in to our airbnb until 3 PM (we asked for early check in but are not able to do so due to other guests leaving that day). Can we store our luggage at the train station for a reasonable price? Is there interesting things to do in the area while we wait for our lodging accommodations? Thank you!

I don't know about luggage storage right at the station, but there will definitely be at least one option nearby.

Atocha Station is quite close to many of the top sights in the city. From closest to a bit farther away:

Museo Reina Sofia
Botanical Garden
Retiro Park
Museo del Prado
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza

It´s a common thing all over Spain, as a homage to relevant doctors, writers, politicians, explorers, presidents...The main train station in Bilbao (we have several train stations, this is the biggest one) is called Estación de Abando Indalecio Prieto, but everyone calls it Estación del Norte. Atocha, Chamartín, Delicias, Abando...are all neighbourhoods where the station was located and it was easy to identify in those older times.

We have an upcoming trip to Spain and I bought train tickets on Trainline after seeing recommendations on the Forum. My tickets are for: Madrid-Puerta de Atocha to Cordoba and Sevilla-Santa Justa to Madrid-Puerta de Atocha. After reading the post above I think I now understand why I couldn't buy tickets from/to Madrid Atocha.

My questions is this: did I in fact buy the correct train tickets to get us from Madrid Main to Cordoba Main and Sevilla Main to Madrid Main? Thanks!

“Madrid Puerta de Atocha” refers to the departure platforms for all high-speed trains at Madrid’s Atocha station. “Sevilla Santa Justa” train station is where all high-speed trains ( such as Renfe AVE trains, IRYO’s Frecciarosa trains and Ouigo’s TGV trains). all arrive and depart from in Seville.
There is only one train station in Cordoba.

So, yes, you bought the correct tickets from “Madrid Puerta de Atocha” to Cordoba, Cordoba to “Sevilla Santa Justa” and “Sevilla Santa Justa” back to “Madrid Puerta de Atocha”

Just finished booking some train tickets on Renfe. There appear to be 2 Atocha. One is Atocha cercania and the other Atocha-Almudena Grandes.
