Madrid outdoor cafes/Plaza de Olavide

Hello fellow travelers,

In September we will be staying for a few days in a hotel a bit east of the Museo Sorolla (we'll be able to walk to the Plaza de Olavide). I am wondering if those with knowledge of that area could post your outdoor cafe recommendations. If you have a favorite dinner venue or two in that area, we'd appreciate those recommendations as well. I read a review of Periplo (Greek food) that looks promising.

Also, is there a protocol for getting seats at an outdoor (umbrella) table? We don't want to be the ugly Americans.

Thanks for sharing your expertise!

That is not an area of the city most tourists visit. As for seating, most of the time an employee will be standing in the establishment’s door and will either greet you or point you towards a table. If you just sit down you may not be noticed right away.
