We will fly into Madrid and wonder about the best way to get into the city central. Also any lodging suggestions or day tours suggestions would be appreciated. We are getting old and need all the help we can get! Thanks.
The easiest way to get from the airport to the city is to catch a taxi. The fare is a flat rate of 30 euros for the trip. You also could go less expensively by commuter train, Metro or bus, but with any of these options you would have to deal with your luggage on public transportation.
for hotels, it depends on your budget and tastes. I like the Hotel Europa on Puerta del Sol. Easy to get to from the airport and a great location. It's a block off Gran Via and easy walking distance to many tourist sights. The hotel is nice and the rooms are decent sized. There is a restaurant on site and shopping is very close by. You can access the subway system at Puerta del Sol virtually under the hotel.
