Madrid Hotels in Pedestrian Zone

Ask the hotels how close a taxi can get. There really is no "the pedestrian zone" in central Madrid, there are though streets closed to traffic, but not all streets. For example vehicles can drive on Calle Mayor, right up to the corner of Puerta del Sol, so get out walk across the plaza and to Hotel Europa. Similar with several other streets within a block of the hotel. You may not be able to drive up to the front door, but is a block too much of a walk?

We stayed in the pedestrian zone. You just walk a street or two and roll your luggage. But due to the noise at night, I don’t recommend the pedestrian zone unless you are guaranteed rooms that don’t face the street. This is true for any pedestrian zone or heavily trafficked artery such as Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

That's not a very nice area of the city to stay in......why didi you choose Sol for your hotel?

I don’t agree with the previous comment. I think Hotel Europe’s location is good. I haven’t stayed there, but I’ve stayed nearby. Your hotel is centrally located in relation to the major tourist attractions which is great for a first time visitor. The hotel has 800 reviews on booking with a 9.8 location rating. That’s pretty good.

I have no idea about that specific hotel or most others in the area, but I agree the Puerta del Sol area is not a good place to stay in Madrid. It's kind of like staying in Times Square if you're staying in Manhattan. It's a great pedestrian city with a metro system, why not just stay directly in a nice area and walk another 1/2 a mile, take one more cabify per day, one more metro ride.

If you want to be central, I would recommend the Letras area near the Prado if you're interested in going there and the Reina Sofia. That's plenty central to everything.

I’ve stayed at Europa a few times and like its location. The Puerta del Sol is a pedestrian only zone, so if arriving by vehicle during the day you’ll get dropped a couple minutes walk from the hotel. The last street through it was removed in 2022-2023. When we last stayed there in 2024 taxis pulled up to the hotel door before 6am. We always take the metro to/from the airport. It does require a couple line changes, but is easy to navigate.

If you don’t like hustle bustle then you may want to stay further from the Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol. Each is lively until the early morning hours. It’s a personal preference which area to stay in. What you want to do and see should help you decide.

That late in the season and so close to now I would just wait for hotels to drop prices. We saved maybe 40% off downtown Madrid hotel prices by booking the week before arrival in mid November. The risk is minimal at this point.

Be advised there are three large conferences taking place when you will be visiting. That is probably why prices are elevated. Prices will probably be double the normal rate whichever part of the city you decide to stay in.

Almagro, Retiro, Ibiza, Salamanca, Letras--those are all so much more charming than the area around Sol which is crammed with fast-food eateries, chain shops, etc....around Sol, and along the Gran Via, just to the north, you have a pretty concentrated group of homeless individuals..
