We will be a family of 3 (11 year old child) staying in Madrid from April 9th through April 12th 2022. We will arrive by train from Malaga and our main attractions will be the Prado museum and seeing a football game at the Bernabeu stadium. I'm looking for hotel recommendations with a spacious room and centrally located in the city. I know it will be the beginnings of holy week and major crowds. Modern is good, but not necessary. Thank you!!! ( any train tips welcome)
We enjoyed our stay at The Principal just off of GranVia. It is a perfect location for visiting many museums including The Prado as well as beautiful Retiro Park.
The Ritz Carlton is right next to the Prado and is truly a great experience, unfortunately the price is more than most people want to pay. We loved it there in September of this year.
At the other end of the cost scale there is the Europa Hotel that is used by the Rick Steves groups, it is centrally located on Sol Plaza and is a easy walk to the Prado or the Palace. The rooms are dated but clean, the only down side was restaurant was not good so we ate all our meals out. The staff was excellent and very helpful.
In 2018, my husband and I, plus my then-12-year-old son, stayed at the Catalonia Las Cortes in a triple room -- a spacious room with a double bed plus a single. It's a well-located place on the slightly plush end of the accommodations scale and was a nice treat.
It's hard finding hotel rooms for three people in Madrid. I don't know if you've considered an apartment, but it might be easier to find a good fit (and often cheaper, too). I use booking.com, and we have reservations here for January; there are tons of other options:
The 'ibis Styles Madrid Prado Hotel' is a budget hotel, but modern, clean, & comfortable. The web site says it's a seven minute walk to the museums.

Good day,
We were in Madrid for New Years (2019-2020) and stayed at the Hotel Liabeny. This hotel was excellent for our purposes. It was clean, centrally located and affordable. It was a very manageable 15-20 minute walk to the Prado. The stadium is too far to walk (for me) from this hotel but the Metro is availavle in the Puerta del Sol, just a 3-5 minute walk away. Also, its quite easy to catch a cab or an Uber right outside the hotel in Plaza del Carmen. If time allows I'd suggest the other art galleries in the city as they are quite magnificent. They Thyssen and the Reina Sophia are definitely worth the time. The Royal Palace is another must see and is also full of wonderful art. I have great memories of Madrid as it was my last "Pre-COVID" and I hope that you find it just as magical as I always have. Also try to take in a meal at Sobrino de Botin, the food is great but the ambiance is even better. Best of luck on your upcoming trip!

I stayed there many years ago and now it has be renovated. Great location and reasonable. I wanted to go back next year but now on our plans this trip.
Twice I have stayed overnight at Hotel Mediodía when I had short stays in Madrid and wanted to be near Atocha train station. For longer stays I have stayed a few times at Hostal Acapulco in a triple. Hostal in Spain is not a youth hostel. Mediodia is a large hotel, directly across the street from Atocha and literally shares a plaza with the Reina Sofía Art Museum. From there it is a very short walk to El Prado Museum and also El Retiro Park. I stayed in a twin but it does have triples. There is also a metro station a few feet away from the entrance to the hotel and lots of restaurants, bars and banks in the area. So it was very convenient for connecting to places and we stayed because we were in transit and wanted to be close to the train station. When I actually visited Madrid as a destination I stayed at Hostal Acapulco, a small place, located on a floor of a bigger building, not too far from Plaza del Sol and Grand Vía and Plaza Mayor. Very small, certainly not “modern” and does not offer food. Both were reasonably priced. Mediodía, being a large hotel, seemed to have lots of tour groups staying there and I believe we had a rate with breakfast but not sure. I would not say that either of the rooms were large or spacious, (most European hotel rooms do not seem to be “spacious” to me) but certainly clean, adequate and well located. No idea about your route to the stadium. Train travel in Spain is comfortable. Atocha is a huge station. The Retiro Park is right behind El Prado and your child might enjoy the park. Also consider a visit to the Palacio Real, the Plaza Mayor and nearby Mercado San Miguel.
