Hello:
Travelling on November 9, 2014
Arrive Madrid Atocha train station via AVE train from Barcelona in the afternoon.
Flight to USA leaving the next day around 11 am.
Please recommend a hotel that has easy transport from Atocha and to the airport.
I prefer to use the Aeropuerto bus which leaves from Atocha so a hotel nearby would probably be best.
Travelling alone, so a safe area is important. Would like to be able to walk to a restaurant that night.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

I have no idea what you look or budget for in a hotel but I have stayed here a couple of times - http://www.mediodiahotel.com/en/
The airport express bus also stops at Cibeles, which gives you some additional options. I stay at the Westin Palace, which is midway between the two (a couple of blocks from both stops) but I use hotel points for my stay. It is pricey. I travel alone and don't feel unsafe walking in Madrid at night.
I don't have a particular hotel recommendation in that neighborhood, but it does sound like the most convenient choice for yoru plan. You can use Google Maps to search for "hotels near Atocha station," and there are many. (Rick's book lists hotels that are a little more central, for sightseeing convenience and atmosphere, not near Atohcha.) I have also felt quite comfortable walking around Madrid. It's a city where lots of people are out very late, so you won't be alone.
