Madrid, Granada & Seville in February

What major sights in Madrid, Granada and Seville would we need to have advance reservations? I'm hoping we won't because it's off season.

We like to travel more spontaneously, but if there are sights that we won't get in unless we reserve in advance, we want to do this. Thanks!

Our plan is to focus on the "must see" sights: Museums, palaces, cathedrals, etc. The type of stuff that Rick Steves gives three stars to (and also fitting in to star sights around them.)

Here is our draft itinerary. All comments, suggestions and tips welcome!

The Alhambra and the Sevilla Cathedral, especially the rooftop tour.

The Mesquita in Cordoba needs an advance ticket too. You might be able to buy advance tickets to the art museums in Madrid. The Thyssen Bornemisza museum in Madrid is as good or better than the Prado.

Just checking: do you have a late flight leaving Madrid on the 25th to be planning to spend the night of the 24th in Cordoba?

Are you planning to visit the Alhambra on the 22nd, moving on to Seville late?

This is a really tight and fast itinerary - the only opportunity for spontaneity I see is room for a decision to not go somewhere.

We cut out Cordoba.

Also we are doing El Escorial, Segovia, and Toledo as day trips from Madrid, and we moved Segovia to the day before we fly out.

If we can cancel one or more of them if we need a quieter/slower day...

As an additional note - Madrid and Granada will be cold, Seville will be pleasant.

Buy your Alhambra tickets immediately if you don't already have them.

I'm confused as I don't see travel time between Madrid area and Granada or between Granada and Seville.

Were you thinking leaving Madrid on the morning of 2/21, spending the afternoon and night in Granada, then traveling on to Seville on 2/22? You might check train times and prices - generally cheaper the earlier purchased. (or check flights or buses) The distances involved and logistics of transport when including Granada in your itinerary don't really lend themselves to last minute plans - even if you are renting a car.

If renting a car, I encountered a snow and ice storm causing cars to leave the road, lots of ambulances, and slow downs between Granada and Madrid last March.

Haven’t been to El Escorial or Toledo, but the Mezquita was a highlight of our three trips to Spain. Recommend you reconsider Cordoba.

I think you should reconsider Cordoba, too. The Mezquita is amazing! And Cordoba is a lovely city with other wonderful sights. Such as the Palacio de Viana, with its 12 patios; the Roman Bridge; the Alcazar and its gardens; and exploring and getting lost in the Juderia.

We reserved accommodations and got train tickets and so are locked out of Cordoba on this trip. We'll have to save it for a future trip. I'm thinking that we'll need to do a roadtrip that focuses on Andalucia at some point.
