Madrid apartments and advice on location

Looking to book an apartment for 3 nights in June. We will be traveling with our teens and would like somewhere centrally located, quiet and not too $$.

I also could use some advice on the general planning of what to do in Madrid. We are planning on doing a day trip to Toledo and possibly Segovia if we feel that only one day is sufficient for us in Madrid. If we need 2 full days, we will skip Segovia. My kids want to do a tour of the real Madrid stadium and we will book an overview tour of Madrid upon arrival. We are not into museums or art but if there are any "must see's" we don't want to miss them.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Try for an apartment in La Latina district, around Anton Martin metro, with easy access to Atocha station.

It is easy to see the best of old Madrid in a day on foot.
Start at the Royal Palace
Then to Plaza Mayor
Then to Puerta del Sol
Then to Plaza de Cibeles
Then to Puerta de Alcala
Finishing at el Retiro Park

If you are not big art fans then you may like to take advantage of free museum times.
For free admission to the Prado Museum visit Monday to Saturday from 6pm to 8pm, or Sundays from 5pm to 7pm.
For free admission to the Reina Sofia Museum visit Monday to Saturday from 7pm to 9pm (ex closed on Tue).

@David, thats great info on the free museum times! Thank you! Also, thanks for that itinerary. I think that Madrid is going to be our least favorite city but we can always do day trips to Toledo and Segovia and we find ourselves wanting something more.
