Madrid and Andalucia 11 Days (with nature/hiking)

Hello!

My husband and I will be in Castilla and southern Spain together for 11 days in late May/early June. I will stay on after for work and could do some more sightseeing on my own in the following weeks, but I'd like to save the best stuff for the time we're together. We have the basic contours of our trip laid out, but have some questions and are trying to figure out how to include some nature sightseeing and/or hiking. Here's our current plan, along with our questions:

  • 4 days in Madrid, including the day we arrive (from the states) since we get in very early. We plan to do day trips to Segovia and Toledo; is there enough time for El Escorial? We were thinking that it wouldn't take all day and could possibly fit it in.
  • 2 days in Granada. I'm thinking we'll fly from Madrid to save time, or is the drive worth it? We plan to spend one day to see the Alhambra and the market, and I'm thinking we'll spend the second day doing some kind of excursion in the nearby mountains (Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada). Has anyone been to this park and maybe done some hiking there? If so, what did you think? We can tolerate moderate hikes.
  • 2 days in the white hill towns of Ronda, Arcos, and Zahara. We plan to rent a car in Granada to enjoy the mountainous countryside on the way to these towns since it's only about a 3 hour drive and we could leave early. Which one would be best to spend the nights? We were also thinking of visiting the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park while we're here. Is there much to see there, and how long should we spend there vs. the towns?
  • 1 day in Gibraltar. We're not sure whether to continue with our rental car or take a bus from Ronda, and not sure whether to spend the night in Gibraltar or come back to Ronda, or even move on to our final destination, Sevilla, that night, since I imagine accommodations in Gibraltar are more expensive. Also, would it be worth it to cut a day from something else and take a day trip to Tangier?
  • 2 days in Sevilla. We will be spending our anniversary here on our last night and would appreciate any suggestions for nice restaurants for a dinner celebration. My husband leaves on the 12th day.

Our last question is whether this itinerary sounds reasonable. As our first trip to Spain, we want to make it memorable, but we realize we're fitting in a lot and could consider cutting something (i.e., one of the days in Madrid, one or both days in Granada, or maybe one of the days in the white hills) since we know we will be back to see other parts of Spain. We appreciate any comments or suggestions!

A few thoughts:

  • I think you'll find that flying from Madrid to Granada saves you no time compared to the train. There's a late-morning rail option that takes about 4-1/2 hours.

  • If you have not already puchased tickets to the Alhambra, you need to check on that right away. The Alhambra sells out early.

  • Morocco is wonderful, but I wouldn't bother with Tangier even if it didn't take so long to reach.

  • Gibraltar will also chew up a lot of your time (though I guess not so much if you drive), and you don't have Cordoba on your itinerary. It's much more accessible.

  • Is this your first European trip? Jetlag wipes out most people on Day 1, which means you're probably going to have 3 usable days in Madrid plus some walking-around-and-trying-to-stay-awake time. If you go to El Escorial, when will you see Madrid?

Your time spent getting to Gibraltar would be better spent with an extra night in Sevilla, allowing for a visit to the Mezquita in Cordoba, a far more worthwhile (and truly spectacular) sight. Otherwise a really great trip which you will both enjoy immensely. Cheers.

I completely agree with David's suggestions. Skip Gibraltar and Morocco on this trip. Add time on to Sevilla or fit in a trip to Córdoba. Eleven days will fly by so quickly. While in Granada the Alahambra is spectacular. We also enjoyed the cathedral in Granada but my favorite Spanish cathedral is the one in Toledo. Segovia will take you a day and Toledo will take you a day so that leaves you about a day and half to see the sites of Madrid. You probably won't squeeze in el Escorial if you visit the art musuem(s), el Retiro park, the royal palace, the plaza mayor, etc. Not too far from Segovia there is a beautiful palace and gardens called La Granja de San Ildefonso. I enjoyed that very much and that might be coupled with your day to Segovia on your way there or return.

Thanks so much for your suggestions!
We do already have tickets for Alhambra for the 5th day, with entrance to the Nazari palace at 2 pm.

Based on these comments we decided to skip Gibraltar. I had wanted to climb the rock but will leave it for another trip. We will add the extra day to Seville, either spend it there or go to Cordoba. We are considering cutting the day trips in Madrid to have more time to see the rest of the city. If we only do one side trip from Madrid, what might be best, Toledo or Segovia?
For getting to Granada, why is flying not a good option? I found flights that leave at 8:30 and arrive in Granada at 9:40. It seems like a time-saver to me, but I don't know the airports and wait times there.
Thanks again!

It takes time to get to and from airports, and you have to build in a buffer in case of unexpected delays. And the train is just a more pleasant experience. I confess that I don't know what amount of advance check-in time your planned airline recommends, so I'm only guessing, but I stood in an airline check-in line for an international flight out of Madrid Barajas last year for nearly an hour. I then had to deal with security. Sone budget airlines have hard-and-fast rules about having cleared security and being at the gate quite far in advance.

I spent multiple nights in both Toledo and Segovia, so I'd hate to choose, but Toledo is my favorite. You can leave Segovia open since last-minute train tickets will not cost you extra. See how it goes in Madrid.
