Madrid 1st January

How will we fill in the day on 1st January? Will anything be open ? Would it be a good day to travel to Toledo or Segovia or will everything be closed? Thanks for your help.

It is a public holiday Everything is closed except church, everyone will be sleeping in not getting up early to go anywhere after partying late night like they do in Spain especially New years eve,
Look up the train schedules online first and go to Segovia see the Roman Aquaduct it is outside and the cathedral there.

A perfect time to take great photos of iconic sights - without 500 people standing in the foreground.

Take advantage of the rare opportunity!

I agree that Segovia is a good idea if you don't want to wander around some quiet streets in Madrid. I think Toledo loses a lot more than Segovia if you can't go inside the sights. Another possibility would be the Town of Alcala de Henares, which has a very pretty historic district. In both cases you'd need to verify the availability of trains. AdeH normally has frequent service, even on Sundays, but January 1 might be different. I'm not positive what the restaurant situation will be like in either place; I've never traveled to Europe at that time of year.
