MAD airport to train station

Hi, we are flying Delta from JFK to MAD arriving 12/29/23 at 8am. Then we are getting a train from Atocha at 12:30pm. Does that seem like enough time to get through passport control and get a taxi to the train station? Or should we try to schedule a later train? Of course, we are hoping the flight arrives on time. Thanks for any advice, this is our first trip to Spain.

That is plenty of time. With Delta, you arrive at Terminal 1, or at least the Terminal 1/2/3 complex. I always think you walk forever for immigration and then to get out, a taxi would avoid the long walk to the Metro station. The other option is that there are direct buses to Atocha. The train is not really an option, that would require getting to Terminal 4, then some changes to get to Atocha.

All together, if all goes well, you should be to Atocha by 10:00, giving you plenty of buffer, enough time to have lunch before getting on the train. You do not mention your destination, but if this is for long, fast trains, I would suggest getting something to eat outside the secure zone of the train station, then allow 30-45 minutes to go through security (quick x-ray of your bags) and get to the waiting area. They will not announce the specific platform for your train until near departure.

Paul,
I was planning to take the Cercanias train to P. Atocha. I thought there was a airport shuttle that only took a few minutes between terminals. I’m arriving on Delta from ATL at 8:45 am (no checked baggage) with train to Cordoba at 12:35 pm. i’ve been through MAD a few times, and know it’s huge, but have not made an immediate train transfer before. I was going off this information (https://madrid-international-airport.com/transportation/airport-to-atocha-train-station/ ) but would appreciate your thoughts on if I should abandon that plan and take another mode of transportation. Thanks

Renee, your plan will work. Plus you get a free Cercanius ticket to Atocha if you have purchased an onward journey.
