My husband and I are planning a honeymoon/ancestry trip. We will be in Macotera and Santiago de la Puebla (the villages listed on his great-grandparents' immigration papers) on November 1st (a Saturday). Is anyone familiar with these villages? Any idea where we might find cemeteries or other historic places?
Not sure what type historic places you’re thinking of. There are plenty of nice small villages in the area as well as Salamanca and Ávila. I’ve been all over that area, but not those two villages.
On Google maps:
For Santiago de Puebla look at Cementerio viejo (old cemetery). It’s at Calle Sta. Maria, 1. There’s also a new cemetery (Cementerio Nuevo) just outside of town.
For Macotera, look at Cementerio de Macotera. It’s at Calle Ermita, 3.
If you cannot get into the cemeteries, inquire at the city hall (ayuntamiento). That’s where all the old records are probably kept. Names and exact dates of birth and any family member names would be helpful for locating records.
The villages are only 16 minutes, 3.6 miles, apart.
Nearby, there is a nice castle in Medina del Campo, Convent of Santa Clara in Tordesillas, Zamora, the tomb of Teresa de Ávila in Alba de Tormes, the abandoned town of Granadilla, the town of Hervás, and Ciudad Rodrigo. There’s a castle in Arévalo and the town of Olmedo is known for it’s storks.
