Luggage storage on Renfe trains

We will be traveling through much of Spain and Portugal on trains this Spring (6 weeks). We are traveling as light as possible, but will each still have two "carry-on" sized bags. I have been booking our tickets on Renfe but have not seen anything about luggage charges and/or storage on the train. We obviously can't keep our luggage at our seats. Has anyone had experience with luggage storage on Renfe trains? thank you!!

There are shelves above your seats for smaller bags and racks at the end of the cars for larger bags, strollers. You can also slip suitcases into areas between back-to-back seats. If everything is full, you just keep your bags near you...at your seat

The racks over the seats will fit anything carry-on size.

Try to get on the train a bit early to have better chance at luggage space. The racks at the
end of the cars are not that large and can get all piled up since passengers are just dumping
their bags on top of what was already there. While it's possible they will fill up, I've never had
an issue with space in the overhead racks.

So, if you have packed any fragile items, don't put the bags on the end racks.

There are no luggage charges for standard sized items.

Overall, as long as you don't block the aisles, it's kind of anything goes. Note that depending
on the situation, an empty seat next to you that you might be tempted to put a bag in may very
well be reserved and taken by a passenger at a later stop.

Thank you for the information! I feel better already. We will plan to place our bags overhead or near our seats. I would prefer to keep them in sight anyway.

Maybe also worth knowing that at many larger stations in Spain, security protocols are in place where you need to run your bag through an x-ray, similar to an airport. Not a big problem, but be there somewhat early to deal with it. I have seen it vary where there is a central security check, then food and seating on the other side, to where the check is going onto the platform at a smaller station.

Thanks for the heads up, Paul. That is something we never experienced with the trains in Italy so it's good to know. We will plan our time accordingly.
