Low Sodium diet in Spain?

Hello. My husband is on a low sodium diet. Is anyone else on this diet? Is there a chain market or recommendations on where to get some snacks and something to eat in case a restaurant/cafe cannot accommodate him? Spanish foods that are/can be low sodium? We are meeting with a dietician before we leave, but just wondering if anyone else has some tips for this in Espana. Most tapas are out, we know... and we are mostly vegetarian but will eat some fish. Gracias! (Oh, going to Barcelona. Granada/La Mancha, Rhoda, Sevilla, Madrid (not in that order) on the My Way tour, and then to Cordoba.

There are supermarkets everywhere in Spain. It won’t be difficult to buy your own groceries. Eating out will be more limiting, as you’d expect. anything that is not cooked specifically for your order will have too much salt in it so maybe look for places that do grilled fish or something like that. I think it’s going to be tricky to be honest.

I am not on a low sodium diet, but since I was in my 20s (I am now 76), I have avoided adding salt to my food. Also, my wife uses very little salt in cooking.
Dining out, there are times when I notice more salt in some things that I eat. Example, I recently had lunch with a friend in a Thai restaurant, ordering Cashew Chicken. It was way over salted, and I even noted this to the waitress. I dine at this restaurant about twice a month and had never ordered Cashew Chicken. Other dishes didn't seem to have as much salt. Example, the Ginger Chicken.

Also, once on a bike ride with friends in a rural town, we dined at a steak house. My T bone was WAY over salted. I sent it back. The restaurant told me that I should have asked for no seasoning. I told them, that while I season my steaks a bit, I never use salt. Sure, some liquid seasoning includes salt, but they added lots of it.

Having been to Spain several times, I have notices some dishes seem to include salt. Still, never had a dish so that I sent it back.
I know that Mediterranean food is generally good for your heart health, so consider that. Also, consider learning how to ask in Spanish for low or no salt in your meal.

Perhaps when doing tapas, you could choose dishes that are less salty.

In general, decent restaurants in Spain use significantly less sodium than any restaurant in the U.S. More dishes are prepared fresh.

A few grocery stores are Día, Mercadona, Carrefour, and El Corte Inglés (is also a department store). There are also Lidl and Aldi stores.

Thank you to all of you for your replies. I will pass on to my husband, who now has "no sodio" in his vocabulary!

In Spain we would say "Sin sal por favor" which is "without salt please" or "Con menos sal" which is "with less salt".

In Spain we can use quite a bit of salt actually, in preserving food, cooking food etc. Just look at all of our cured meats. We also eat salted fish. Even our vegetables like peppers we like to salt them quite a bit with olive oil too. All our rice dishes are made with caldo.

Thank you for correcting how to ask for low sodium! We will try and get food from stores per other responses, and use the phrases you recommend! Also, may have to put the low sodium on hold for a couple weeks!
