Louis Vuitton 37TH America's Cup Barcelona

So the above race is going to be in Barcelona the days that I am there.

I will be there for the last few days. The very last day of this race will be the day that I will be trying to get to the port to take my cruise.

I have heard of this race but really do not know what it is or what I should expect.

Should I be excited or concerned.

Thanks for the info and the comments.

The American cup is not my cup of tea but maybe there will be some activities and events that will interest me. Maybe there will be fireworks or iive music. I did read something about "villages" that were open to the public.

However I worry about the additional crowds and if there will be difficulty getting transportation around Barcelona.

If I knew this event was going to happen the same days that I was there for a pre cruise, I might have chosen another cruise from another port.

I think the participants of the American Cup may be the crowd who shops on Old Bond Street in London.

Doesn't Louis Vuitton have a shop there?

I’m Guessing It’s Expensive to Race?

In a word: Yes. The boats alone cost between $8 million to $10 million, and most teams have a backup just in case. However, the boats are only part of the story, because you also have to take into account the entry fee ($3 million), the staff (Oracle Team USA had 130 people in 2013), the cost of shipping all that sailing equipment around the world, plus costs of maintenance, operations, and incidentals. It has been estimated that mounting a successful America’s Cup campaign costs over $100 million. Larry Ellison may have spent $250 million to $300 million defending the title in 2013.

Be sure to adjust for inflation since 2013

On the bright side, the pickpockets will have more attractive targets, than you to prey on. :-)

it looks like it is going to be very interesting. I do not know what to expect and maybe that is good.

I guess that it is going to be amazing but I planned on going to Barcelona to see Barcelona, not the American Cup. There may be a lot of things going on around the American Cup that will keep me from the churches and museums.

There are probably going to be thousands to hundreds of thousands of fans and probably a lot are very wealthy just like the participants. Sounds like it is going to be very hoity-toity to me.

And I was thinking similarly to yourself that maybe I will not look so good to the pickpockets. Still I am going to be on high alert.

well I was able to do some research about The American Cup and this is among what I have found:

The America's Cup Race Village in Barcelona promises to be a vibrant hub of activity and the heart of the event off the water. Here's what you can expect:

Location and access:

Situated in Barcelona's Port Vell, along the Moll de la Fusta, the Race Village is conveniently located in the city center and easily accessible by public transportation (Drassanes and Barceloneta metro stations).
Free and open to everyone: One of the best things about the Race Village is that admission is completely free! It's a fantastic opportunity for everyone, regardless of budget, to soak up the America's Cup atmosphere.
Things to see and do:

Interactive exhibits: Dive deeper into the world of sailing and the America's Cup through engaging exhibits showcasing the history, technology, and challenges of the competition. You might even get to try your hand at a sailing simulator!
Live entertainment: Enjoy live music, cultural performances, and other entertainment throughout the day, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.
Team bases and sponsor booths: Get up close to the action at the team bases, where you can see the yachts up close, meet the sailors, and learn about their strategies. Sponsor booths will also offer various activities and merchandise.
Food and drinks: Savor delicious food and drinks from local vendors, featuring a range of cuisines to satisfy all tastes. Enjoy a meal or snack while taking in the vibrant atmosphere.
Kids' activities: Keep the little ones entertained with dedicated activities designed specifically for them, including face painting, games, and interactive exhibits.
Additional highlights:

Big screens: Watch live broadcasts of the races on large screens throughout the Race Village, ensuring you don't miss any of the action happening on the water.
Merchandise: Take home a piece of the America's Cup experience with official merchandise stalls offering a variety of clothing, souvenirs, and collectibles.

This is going to be a Christmas for pickpockets.

Carlos

I was thinking the exact same thing. Pickpockets may come from all over Europe just for the picking.

The crowd is going to be drinking and screaming and dancing and cheering. They are definitely going to let the guard down.

Drinking, yes but not screaming, dancing and cheering....that's too uncouth.

Well JC

Even the wealthy and the important and the powerful shakers and movers "get down"

And besides some of the spectators and fans are going to be more ordinary.

why would they be screaming? I can't imagine why during yacht races people would be dancing. It isn't that sort of thing...

Hi Nigel

I have read that there is going to be live music of both international and local bands. Maybe I misunderstood how much entertainment there is going to be

The following is taken from a post of mine that is further up the thread

"Live entertainment: Enjoy live music, cultural performances, and other entertainment throughout the day, creating a lively and festive atmosphere".

I assumed popular and maybe well known bands and musicians. Maybe not?????

Furthermore won't fans be cheering their teams on

My post is dated 1/24/24 about 2:30 a.m. if yiou want to read the whole post. The information comes from The American Cup website

I believe that it is 6 posts up from your post.

Not in the celebratory way that you alluded to in your other post. We had part of the America's Cup in Portsmouth a few years ago. In the main it was watched by wealthy people who are not inclined to dance, scream and jump about when watching a yacht race. As for fans, most people are not interested in the America's Cup, it's not a sport that is accessible to the average person so there won't be crowds of people cheering on their favourite team as most people don't have one. It's an exclusive sport enjoyed by the rich and famous, it's not comparable to football, baseball etc.

I was in Alicante for the start of a major sailing race last year, and outside of the race village, it had no impact. America's cup is certainly bigger but still, I would not worry about extra crowds in what is already a large, crowded city. A big soccer game or the F1 Grand Prix would have a lot more impact.

Thanks to all who responded.

I have only heard of The America Cup but knew nothing more about it.

I plan to check it out. I love live music and it sounds like there is no charge, There is no lineup yet and will not be until closer to the event.

Relieved to hear that I will still be able to use public transportation.

Maybe it will be fun.
