I've read Rick's Spain guide as well as endless trip advisor reports. Looking for something under $200 a night. We're Ok with B&Bs but will need airconditioning for 4 nights in the summer. Any recommendations?
We just booked the Hotel Granvia in Barcelona right off the northern part of Placa Catalunya and close to Passeig de Gracia very close to a Metro stop. For a classic double room, which is one step above standard, at the end of July we are paying an average of 142.50 Euros per night. Online the reviews and photos of the room look great. We have weekend and non-weekend nights. They are including breakfast when we show them our Rick Steves travel book.
Hotel Constanza near the Gran Corte des Catalunyes has a/c. It also has a terrace and a rooftop bar to cool off at. I went in September and definitely paid less than $200/night.
Thank you for the suggestions. I looked at the websites for Hotel Granvia and Hotel Constanza and they both look nice.
We loved L'Antic Espai on our visit several years ago. Great location, charming owners, very responsive.
We really enjoyed our three nights at HotelmJazz a few years ago. It is two blocks off Plaça Catalunya and also very close to the Universität stop for the airport bus is you are arriving that way.
The rooftop terrace has a small swimming pool, a very nice amenity late afternoon. The rooms are modern and have A/C. looks like summer prices are around €122 a night for a double room without breakfast. (InnSpainnwe preferred to find our own breakfast at a café, instead of paying €10 for the hotel breakfast).
Thank you for the recommendations. They are all helpful!
We stayed at hotel montecarlo and really loved it!
I can second the recommendation for the Hotel Granvia. I have stayed there twice and found it a very, very pleasant accommodation. If they aren't quite what you are looking for (or if they are fully booked, which can happen in the summer), you might also consider the Hotel Balmes in the Eixample , or newer part of the city. The Balmes is perfectly located for visitors focusing on the city's Modernista sights. Several of them are clustered within a 5 t 10 minute walk of the hotel. In fact, if you are heading to Holy Family (Sagrada Familia) from the Balmes, exit the hotel, turn right, and walk for 15 to 20 minutes.
Wow! These are all really great suggestions! Thank you so much!
I would plan on AC in the summer. Barcelona isn't as hot as many parts of Spain, but it can be plenty hot in the summer to make sleeping without AC uncomfortable.
We stayed at Hostal Capri, also near Placa Catalunya. It wasn't fancy or particularly charming but we were happy with it. It was clean, quiet (at least on the alley side), convenient, our room was quite large and reasonably priced - and the staff were all nice. We were there in April and didn't need AC so I can't remember whether they had it. About half their rooms are ensuite and half aren't. If you choose to stay there, double check which kind of room you are booking (don't assume ensuite).
Thanks all!
