Looking for Cáceres recommendations

We are spending one day in Cáceres this Spring. Any ideas for particular restaurants and sites are very welcome. Thank you.

The Cáceres I’m going to is NW if Seville. Any tips for there?

I'm sorry, Becky. The second time I looked at your thread title (just now), I realized what I had done.

Alas, I don't remember specifics about my visit to Caceres; maybe the heat fried my brain. I basically wandered up and down every street in the medieval district, going inside places where it was possible to do so--but there weren't all that many such spots compared to a lot of other historic cities. I believe they've restored a lot of the old buildings, but they are often being used for government offices not open to the public. You won't find the area chock-full of cafes and souvenir shops, though I do see a number of restaurants now open in the area on Google Maps. The historic part of Caceres really does feel lost in time. I believe I worked from notes taken from either a Rough or Lonely Planet guidebook. Lonely Planet sells electronic versions of individual chapters of its books.

Sorry not to be more helpful. I hope someone else who's been to Extremadura spots this thread soon.

The city was the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy in 2015. I've been there twice, but don't have any restaurant recommendations. However, these may help -

The city probably gets a lot less tourist traffic than some other cities. That is, on whole, very nice. It did seem there were fewer English speakers and fewer restaurants with English menus posted outside. There's sometimes an English menu inside or an English speaking waiter or waitress.

Thank you so much, Going233. The information makes me happy with our decision to stay there. It’s always nice to travel somewhere know for its food.

It is NW of Sevilla, but it's not close. I assume you are stopping for the day "en route" between other cities, not doing it as a day-trip from Sevilla?

Cáceres‎ is a very handsome town and I'd suggest you spend most of your time in and around the monumental zone. There are city walls and towers, some Moorish, and various "casa" in Mudéjar style. Plenty of old, higgledy-piggledy streets. I don't specifically remember the catedral - but there is bound to be one, there nearly always is. I'm not sure where we ate, but probably we headed for the plaza Mayor, just outside the walls, as going there or nearby is usually a good bet in most smaller towns.

Thanks you, Nick. Yes, we will be traveling from Tavira, Portugal towards the Madrid airport. We thought Cáceres would make a nice spot to spend a night. It will be Easter week, so want to avoid heavily tourited towns.

Hi Becky,
I have also visited Cáceres and really liked it and hope to go back someday. The historic center is very photogenic and compact. Look for the menú del día for good midday meals. We stayed at a very small town nearby and went into Cáceres for the day. Another town to consider on your route to Madrid is Trujillo. Very old and again we did not run in to many tourists. There we did stay overnight at beautiful Palacio Chaves Hotel. It was a great town to explore. Trujillo is much smaller. Both are excellent choices to consider.
